The project director also assisted the project participants in the application of Christian theology to their daily hospice service.  In order to achieve this, the project director wrote an eleven-unit biblical reference booklet for the participants and led them in ten related devotions.  The director used tests and conversational questions to evaluate the ministry intervention. Yet today in our increasingly urbanized world, young people are less able to experience the wilderness.  Young people today are unsure how to engage a world of poverty, religions, violence, and clashing civilizations.  Thus, young leaders need reflective dialogue toward a theology of apprenticeship for missions.  In the past 15 years the author has spent nearly a year in the wilderness with groups of young people. The central thesis of this paper is that a vision and ministry, no matter how impressive, cannot belong to one leader but must be embodied in the community through its leadership.  Grounded in the theology of Howard Thurman, it calls attention to the pervasive injustices of living in a society of white privilege, racial prejudice, segregation, and discrimination, and to our blindness as members of Christian congregations within this society. The project consisted of survey, seminar, training and follow-up with churches. As a result, church leaders and Sunday school teachers were challenged and changed attitude toward children's ministry. However, in order to implement effective children's ministry, more is required than changed hearts of leaders.
