It begins with an empirical analysis of moral issue articles within two Seventh-day Adventist journals, Ministry Magazine and Message Magazine, over the period from fall 2001 through December 2005. Next, a conceptual analysis is undertaken of the theological model that informs moral judgments within these journals. The conclusions of the analysis are that the model of moral theology is legalistic in its commitment to an inflexible and literalistic biblicism. In addition to critiquing the model for moral theology within these journals, the model of moral theology offered by Immanuel Kant is reviewed and found to be inadequate for providing a viable alternative. This is because it too is legalistic in its commitment to an inflexible rationalism. What is offered as a viable alternative for a robust Adventist moral theology is one that takes seriously the Adventist heritage by organically binding moral imperatives to prima facie biblical principles that emerge from major biblical motifs. Moreover, this model incorporates the Adventist prophetic witness to oppressive contexts. This is the organic-prophetic-liberation model of social engagement."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132063300059136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:57:26.061Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:31:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:41:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1f5563ab-9956-4534-92ef-0bb36fb9b4dd","accessControl_ssim":["a4c8afa6-aa10-4913-b484-56805d43beb7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Church renewal by merging: developing a proactive strategy for merging maintenance churches within the Western North Carolina Conference"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:31:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:03:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3969c86b-36c2-426d-abd3-cdc4cc62e816"],"hasLease_ssim":["22b10d5f-a70c-45b1-a3ff-a023f58de43b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hood Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Reginald David Broadnax"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Roger Dean Weisner"],"publisher_tesim":["Hood Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Local church mergers","United Methodist Church","Church membership"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Mergers are becoming commonplace in corporate profit America. Samoans a century ago were given the impression that their cultural values and traditions were somewhat primitive and unfit for the Christian faith. They were told that it was a culture of pagans and heathens, and it did not have a place in the community of faith. Samoan people are proud of their heritage and take pride in their culture, but are somehow confused when they attempt to relate their culture to their faith and other different cultures. The negative impression and attitude from the western culture, as well as their own people, makes their cultural traditions weak and less than perfect in relation to the rest of the world. This adverse attitude is prevalent in some areas of Samoa as well as the Samoan community in the United States, where the influence of western culture is predominant. Truly, when two or more cultures interact, the balance of the scale tends to swing to the values of the stronger and dominant culture. The inferior culture will adopt the values of the predominant culture. This is the situation with the Samoan Christians in Samoa, as well as those who are living in the United States. This issue has been with the Samoan Christians from the time when the first Christian missionaries landed on the shores of the Samoan islands. This situation has not confined its unfortunate impact to Samoan culture alone, but has affected other cultures as well. The author believes that there is no wrongdoing in adopting values from another culture. However, there is a real problem and danger when cultural values and heritage are lost. Then persons are unable to contribute to society and to find meaning as part of a community of faith. Hence, this project attempts to relate some of the Samoan values and traditions that express the concept of relationship in relation to process theology. The hope is that this small project will assist other Samoan writers, as well as those who find the sacredness of cultural relationship to be an expression of their faith and the Divine."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Claremont School of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7e2d3cb-fc51-4ba5-a7fd-d43f3f8c150b"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131849633824768,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:54:02.293Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:30:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:27:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b41e7959-3707-42e8-84ff-43abbe3db524","accessControl_ssim":["4308d34a-7d99-47f4-83e2-3fc5acc057a9"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Afterpastors: relational harm and healing in the aftermath of clergy misconduct"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:30:31Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:20:04Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["eceded18-6cfd-417f-bb6b-c420e10f1ec7"],"hasLease_ssim":["3cc701cc-448d-4ef7-8467-c71e9c59c4c5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"advisor_tesim":["John Weagraff"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Deborah J Pope-Lance"],"publisher_tesim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Malpractice"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Difficulties commonly experienced by ministers who serve in the aftermath of predecessors' misconduct are described. The ministerial relationship is identified as the locus of these difficulties and as the essential tool of the trade in ministry. Relational patterns in the interactions of misconducting predecessors are shown to generate a process by which the integrity of ministerial relationships deteriorates rendering subsequent ministries predictably difficult. Drawing on relational theory and studies of effective ministers, a model of relational competence is constructed and an ethical standard articulated. Case material illustrates the healing capacity of afterpastors' relational competence to restore integrity to ministerial relationship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Andover Newton Theological School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["63ab0f5c-c5fb-460c-b8ba-dd2fd91f7145"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133956144365568,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:27:31.218Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:30:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:12:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"487748eb-436c-41da-929a-ce5c59ea0af3","accessControl_ssim":["a2c8a760-d4ee-465a-9fcc-36fc95cfeef6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Beguines of the plains: conversations between thirteenth and twenty-first century older women"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:30:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:15:23Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["24f08904-4c7b-41f4-ac55-df1ab3c2ca2e"],"hasLease_ssim":["8315ebe3-a0a8-4a4e-a60f-d05d4117595c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Phillips Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Janet W Parachin"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Judith E Allen"],"publisher_tesim":["Phillips Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["First Christian Church (Hastings, Neb)","Women--Religious life","Beguines","Mechthild, of Magdeburg, approximately 1212-approximately 1282","Older people--Religious life"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This is a report of a project in which a small group of older women from the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Hastings, Nebraska, gathered to learn about the thirteenth century Beguines and themselves over the course of one month of weekly meetings followed by a three-day retreat. Additionally, interviews were conducted with persons in various positions of responsibility within conference hierarchy. The resulting recommendations for the local church, the annual conference and the pastor are intended to enhance the pastor's health and ability to continue in relationship with the congregation.
