The method was successful in teaching Wesley's preaching construct as a scriptural interpretive model. Participants wrote journals weekly and reflected together on their experiences. With cultural interest in keeping sabbath growing, the author learned that the church should not replicate the Jewish sabbath, nor should it carelessly adapt it. The church, rather, is invited to celebrate Sundays according to the messianic banquet's vision for life in the dominion of God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128784090431488,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:05:18.763Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:17:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:37:19Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ee9770dc-e7d4-4a04-a510-aa3e41631a99","accessControl_ssim":["7c39d8d6-b593-446b-a7c5-536822bff80f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Today's university church: case studies of American Baptist university congregations"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:17:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:56:42Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8c6eb4e2-77ba-4eff-afad-eed82abad69e"],"hasLease_ssim":["8cad149a-7076-4f41-be82-f2d7986afe12"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"advisor_tesim":["Joseph E Bush"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David W Russell"],"keyword_tesim":["Church and community","Campus ministry"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary of the Twin Cities"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Universities and colleges--Religion","Baptist","Church work with students","American Baptist Churches in the U.S.A"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Many university churches experienced their 'heyday' in the 1950s. Since then, changes in society, religion and the university itself have created a far different cultural setting for university congregations. Through a survey of American Baptist university churches and case studies of two congregations, mission and identity in the university church are explored. Churches studied exhibited a strong sense of identity, strong connections with the community, strong connections between faith and learning, 'spiritual balance,' and were reappropriating the church's tradition for the present day. With the Wesleyan Methodist Church of Bermuda half its former size, and the United Church of Canada struggling with shrinking resources, both question the value of union. This project proposes changes which address past wounds and will enable the relationship to fulfill its original ecumenical mission of proclaiming Christ's ministry of reconciliation. The project examines the history of the fifteen-year conflict, as experienced by persons involved, in light of ecumenical literature.
