What may appear to some as a crisis of ambiguity about the nature and place of the Ten Commandments in the public and religious spheres in America could be regarded as an opportunity for clarity on the part of preachers. The study addresses the need for Church of God preachers to engage in cultural dialogue through a fresh preaching of the Ten Commandments. The literature review surveys scholarly works regarding the context and meaning of the Decalogue in the Old and New Testaments, the meaning of the Commandments in light of a corrosive postmodern value system, and views of scholars and preachers regarding how to preach the Ten Commandments. The study included interviews with six Church of God Movement preachers, with the goal of learning about their experences related to the place of the Decalogue in the pulpit. The study asked how the preachers handled the Decalogue, exposited the Commandments, and trained congregations in discipleship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130950545965056,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:39:44.856Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:10Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:43:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"fb21c669-ccc1-4d79-9bac-9a7cefb7278f","accessControl_ssim":["254b5940-33a9-41b5-b314-64ff5942f181"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Not just Matthew 18:15-20: Biblical trajectories in conflict utilization before and after the first gospel"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:39:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:18:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a012452c-d829-4a7e-9d72-7d21aad3637b"],"hasLease_ssim":["09b805b0-9929-4fd1-91eb-d0b0550a9872"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Rod Culbertson"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Raymond Craig"],"keyword_tesim":["Congregations--Internal conflict"],"publisher_tesim":["Reformed Theological Seminary, Charlotte campus"],"subject_tesim":["Theology, Practical","Conflict management"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Thesis looks at Matthew 18:15-20 as a paradigm for church conflict utilization. The study used semi-structured interviews with four pastors in the Presbyterian Church in America and two from the Evangelical Presbyterian Church. The review of literature examined scripture, Christian literature and secular literature regarding how leaders lead staff teams. The analysis focused on three areas: how to build trust, what understanding of relational systems are helpful in leading a team, and how personal spiritual growth affects team leadership. The study found that trust is established as the leader practices consistency of character, motivating the team toward a clear vision, developing good communication, mutual accountability, and building an atmosphere of authentic joy. Church staff teams were often strengthened and trust built through difficult situations. The study also found that it is vital for effective leaders to understand relational systems. Finally, the study concluded that spiritual health and vitality are essential for lead pastors to be effective. Effective leaders have consistent and vital times in Bible study and prayer. The study involved semi-structured interviews with pastors and church leaders from four Presbyterian Church in America churches in the eastern United States. The study revealed that diverse strategies of revitalization reflect the unique mix of gifts and resources that each church possesses, both in its leaders and laypeople. Effective renewal plans are not borrowed from models provided by other churches, but are carefully crafted to fit each unique congregation. The study also revealed the importance of communicating a clear rationale and vision for change but also discerning what kind of change the congregation would most readily embrace. Leaders must possess a unitifed commitment to pursue necessary change but also adapt leadership initiatives and style to fit the congregation. Finally, the study revealed that churches more effectively pursue change when they are aware of their church culture and the opportunities and limitations it represents. The study involved semi-structured interviews with fifteen male students of St. Vincent and the Grenadines Community College and a literature review of attempts to explain the relative lack of men in the church and of material with particular relevance to the Caribbean. The research questions were designed to elicit views on manhood, Christianity, and the impact of becoming a Christian on a male. A composite description of a real man, according to the respondents, is one who is strong, assertive, caring, calmly confident, hospitable, wise, loyal, self-reliant, not given to displays of emotion indicating distress, and able to attract women. Positive views of Christianity were that it is a personal relationship with Jesus Christ; that it give a sense of belonging; that it upholds sound moral values; and that it has a worldwide appeal. Pastors were viewed positively as hospitable, moral, and skilled in communicating the Christian message. Christianity was viewed negatively as too restrictive, having unattainable standards, hypocritical, bigoted, and prone to divisiveness. A minority saw pastors as con men and leaders who do not set a good example. Most respondents saw major changes taking place in their lives taking place if they became Christians, with a larger number focusing on new obligations/restrictions and a smaller number on new benefits. Respondents were more or less evenly divided between encouragement and caution in their reaction to a best friend's decision to become a Christian. Finally, they claimed that young men were reluctant to become Christians because they saw negative consequences such as being linked to the female world; loss of freedom to do what they really like to do, e.g., engage in premarital sex; and loss of friends, especially through refusal to participate in gang activities. The study concluded that the most significant factors contributing to the difficulty young males have in becoming Christians seem to be those involving a clash between Christianity and culturally constructed views of manhood. Engaging in premarital sex and participating in gang activities are both marks of manhood in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, and both are incompatible with Christianity. In comparison with a young female who is also considering becoming a Christian, a young male has one additional hurdle to clear: the apparent loss of, or inability to establish, his manhood. This may help explain why fewer young males than young females tend to identify with Christianity."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131212668993536,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:43:54.835Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:38:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:55:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4b6e017b-c865-4195-a881-dad48281e5ea","accessControl_ssim":["cd0a489d-e46c-46ab-984b-0193a0860e99"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Why preach? Suggestions are offered for further development of this topic."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799719760391307264,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:55:12.214Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:38:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:24:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"597718f8-6dae-45c7-9269-728dbcd48060","accessControl_ssim":["446e02c6-977e-4c57-87ce-a55a1c42d7a5"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Creating a culture of Israel: a congregation wrestles with the Word"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:38:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:45:34Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["b67bb4e1-2efe-408d-a16b-b90fa1b35d4d"],"hasLease_ssim":["42c3ae30-1215-435b-8c47-2f4dd458d4b8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Richard N. Scripture makes it clear that love for the stranger through the practice of Christian hospitality is a mandate for the church. Scripture also provides instruction for our conversations which are a critical element for communicating the humility, acceptance and love of the gospel. This study has demonstrated that while the faithful practice of hospitality and redemptive conversation is a vital part of the church's mission, it is becoming increasingly difficult to be faithful in these practcies. A review of literature and a series of interviews have exposed the worldview and external factors affecting faithfulness. When interviewees embraced the gospel, were taught by example, were encouraged, and engaged in hospitality and redemptive conversation, the daily resistance and barriers toward faithful practice were often overcome. Most significant was the affirmation of the indispensability of our theology with a kingdom vision, a grasp and embrace of the gospel, or the compelling power of Christ's love for propelling us into the counter-cultural work of hospitality and redemptive conversation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130552174116864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:33:24.939Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:38:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:49:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e7996528-dc1b-4e62-b7c0-69af1403bfda","accessControl_ssim":["d4f97240-7fd2-44db-99d5-b2c79c81ab3b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Why some Minnesota Baptist youth depart from the faith of their families"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:38:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:45:25Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c7dc8d4e-4052-4706-ba39-a9987797adc8"],"hasLease_ssim":["195ff897-e85e-4f29-910a-3c18ad99d072"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Daniel W Zink"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Ivan D Fiske"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary (St. Louis, MO)"],"subject_tesim":["Religious aspects","Ex-church members","Youth--Religious life","Church work with youth","Rebellion","Dissenters"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to determine why certain Minnesota Baptist Conference (MBC) youth rebel against the faith of their families so that parents, teens, pastors, and denominational leaders might better understand the problem and seek correction based upon the Word of God. First, a literature review of both Christian and secular sources on teen rebellion was conducted. It showed that youth rebellion is a major problem in the church and that encouragers of rebellion include peer pressure, consumerism, and sexual pressure, while checks to rebellion include prayer, sound adult relationships, and truth. Second, twelve interviews were conducted involving both parents and adult children who had rebelled and returned to the faith within the last ten years. These interviews sought to identify contributions to rebellion in the lives of some MBC youth and checks to rebellion. With respect to warning signs, teen withdrawal and the existence of two (or more) worlds for youth were identified. Regarding encouragements to rebellion, peer pressure, culture, parenting issues, indifference toward God, and a self-centered worldview emerged as important themes. Unique data included ignorance of cultural influences, by both parents and youth, and teen personality issues. Regarding checks to departure from the faith, prayer was very significant. Other themes included parental and/or adult support and the direct intervention of God. This project confirms that teen rebellion within the church is a serious matter. The author believes that conference pastors and other leaders should educate their congregations on teen rebellion and provide care and encouragement for struggling parents and their rebellious teens."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131588467097600,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:49:53.224Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":355,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
