The researcher's hypothesis is: effective deacon ministries in selected large Southern Baptist churches will define the role of deacon scripturally as a role of service, will have carefully constructed job descriptions for which deacons are trained, and will hold deacons accountable for their assigned roles and will recognize their service. A literature review examines the words and texts related to the diaconate and the practice of deacon ministry from throughout church history. The research procedure was case-study research methodology. The project researched the characteristics of the modern teenager and developed a model for expository preaching with teenagers. The cases are reviewed along four parameters that define basic conditions needed for a human being to be well and to thrive: i.e., connection, identity, freedom, and power; and from three perspectives: family systems using Edwin Friedman's work, individual psychology using Karen Horney's work, and spiritual theology using Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises. It was anticipated that completing the discipleship programs researched would strengthen participants' spiritual health in each of the six areas measured. It was discovered that the only area in which the programs studied strengthened maturing participants' spiritual health was that of 'Committed to the Lost.' Other significant discoveries were made concerning the affect of gender, church size and age on spiritual health. Significant contributors to spiritual health were also discovered. The pilot demonstrated that a format of a preaching retreat day, formation period, and preaching retreat day was able to perpetuate participation but not facilitation. A survey was devised to ascertain the qualities and traits required by those who invite deacons to preach to their Sunday Assemblies. The survey was mailed to the target population and the results tabulated. The results were then integrated into a suggested curriculum modification for Catholic Universities offering masters degrees as part of diaconal formation.
