It is based on a practical application of the intersection between ethics and religious education. Research included information on the purpose, resources and programs of interfaith web sites and local interfaith groups. A review of interfaith literature on peacemaking, ethics, community and religious education was supplemented with interviews with specialists in these areas including scholars, spiritual leaders and religious educators. A model for an interfaith program is presented, as well as resources for faith communities who seek to implement the model. To answer that question, 70 pastors of the Southern Illinois District, Lutheran Church -- Missouri Synod were asked if they ever used a pre-sermon Bible study to help the hearer listen to the sermon. A seven-week pre-sermon Bible study was developed and taught based on four filters of hearing. Those filters were logos, ethos, pathos, and community. A post-sermon survey was given and separated into two categories, those who attended the pre-sermon Bible study and those who did not. The results were fairly conclusive that those who attended the pre-sermon Bible study had a greater connection to both the sermon and the preacher. The project's hypothesis confront an uncertainty, namely that it is uncertain whether Redeemer's structure influences members to participate in the practice of discipleship. The project is accomplished first through bibliographic research into the biblical, theological, historical, and practical nature of this relationship, and then second through field research investigating this relationship at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Richmond, Virginia. The project concludes with an affirmative response, that Redeemer's structure does influence the practice of discipleship."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Concordia Seminary (Saint Louis, MO)"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c233458a-014a-46a2-aa34-c5309c85f7e6"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720460863143936,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:06:20.236Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:29:03Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:32:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e2b15e27-6d35-4c9d-a716-e77b8e985b3b","accessControl_ssim":["8fa3c8f9-3165-4d61-b275-ad020938db7b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Human health care: the spiritual factor"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:29:03Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:37:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6df4d73c-a6ed-401a-ad9e-c1bab933af78"],"hasLease_ssim":["c01e624a-b855-4209-8c18-0432bd48607a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia"],"advisor_tesim":["Roy Enquist"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["J Vincent Guss"],"publisher_tesim":["Protestant Episcopal Theological Seminary in Virginia"],"subject_tesim":["Medicine and religion","Holism","Medical care","Spiritual life--Christianity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Through a unique method of utilizing a specially designed spiritual assessment process, this dissertation describes a project that demonstrates that attention to the spiritual dimension of humanity is an essential factor in providing high-quality, effective health care. Spiritual assessment occurred while providing pastoral care through emotional support and active listening. Considered along with the medical and psychological assessments, a holistic understanding and treatment of the patient was achieved. A greater sense of healing, harmony of body, mind and spirit was achieved. Participants took a mission trip to visit a rural church school in Haiti and were then interviewed about their experience. Family systems theory and the theology of service and relationships informed the project and the interpretation of the outcomes. New, lasting interpersonal bonds among the travelers were evident, as were strengthened ties to the sister institutions. Although most faith-based community development corporations are established and sustained by larger, African American congregations, this study contends that small churches also have the capacity to achieve effective community development corporation outcomes in economically distressed neighborhoods. In an effort to implement the participatory action research (PAR) model, this researcher sought to facilitate the process of empowerment and social change through the development of three training workshops for pastors and ministers and one final evaluation session that summarized and reported on the input from the target group. It was expected that, through this process, the researcher and the participants would gain an increased awareness of the biblical/theological and historical foundations of community economic development; the knowledge, attitudes and skills necessary to launch a community development corporation; as well as the challenges associated with engaging in community development. There were six major implications drawn from the results of this research project. Each needs the attention of church and denominational leaders; each poses a potential threat to the expansion of church-based Christian community development ministries that are so badly needed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129415570161664,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:15:20.989Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":355,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
