Drawing on the history of early Salvation Army preaching into critical conversation with the felt realities of postmodernity, this thesis argues for a recovery of biblical preaching that seeks to name what is at stake for the listener. With a rationale in place for a hybrid church to meet on an alternate night, next came the planning and research phase, culminating in the launch of 'The Journey.' One year later 'The Journey' came to an abrupt end. What went wrong? This project aimed at encouraging Scripture reading in the Sunday worship service of C\u0026MA churches. It involved fifteen C\u0026MA pastors who used a three-month segment of a four-year Bible reading schedule, developed for this project. Each Sunday they read the assigned reading and material given to them to help them prepare for and introduce the reading. They then filled out a questionnaire, which attempted to evaluate their reactions and ideas concerning the three-month implementation period. They also filled out a short questionnaire three months after they completed the implementation period. This questionnaire sought to identify if they were still reading Scripture regularly in worship and why they were or were not continuing in this biblical practice. To start, healthy churches were observed and literature on discipleship was explored. A manual was created and put to use with church leadership and with a focus group of congregants. The study includes one hundred staff nurses at a medical center in central California in which the risk of compassion fatigue was measured prior to intervention.  The intervention included eight hours of workshop and three follow-up sessions in which steps to reduce compassion fatigue were introduced. There were twenty-two participants in the intervention and every participant indicated in the post workshop measurement a significant reduction in compassion fatigue risk. Research was conducted on the topics of self-care and burnout. An examination of the Gospels had as a goal finding a model of self-care in Jesus' life. An attempt was made to reconcile the command to 'deny self' and 'to love your neighbor as yourself'. A course involving self-care techniques and examples from the life of Jesus was developed and taught to seventeen laity. Their parents seem unaware of this fact, possibly because they share this quality. This study seeks to discover ways to initiate steps for intentional spiritual formation for families in small churches. By conducting a qualitative study of the self-reported beliefs and behavior concerning personal responsibility for child spiritual formation among specific parents in his church and in six additional churches, the author discovered a disconnect between their behavior and beliefs.
