Pastors were encouraged to maintain this perspective by developing a strategy for regularly embracing this new viewpoint in their lives. The pastors participated in three two-hour workshops, and one five-hour retreat. Through questionnaires, evaluation surveys, and discussions, the project leader was able to assess the overall effectiveness of the project. The dissertation/project commences with an exegesis of the sacred texts and traditions of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam concerning the slave of Sarah and mother of Ishmael, Abraham's first child. Focusing on selected works of art from diverse cultures and periods, including manuscripts, paintings, sculptures, poetry, and films, the iconography is contextually and hermeneutically analyzed from each artist's social location. He studied resilence literature, conducted personal interviews with chaplains, and collected data/responses from an online survey. He learned that incorporating intentional self-care practices that nurture the body, mind, and spirit may reduce the risk of burnout and compassion fatigue, while lowering the impact of secondary traumatic stress. Using scripture, personal reminiscence, theological reflection, and story telling, the senior was empowered to engage through discussion a retelling of each of the five stories God meeting people. The seniors were surveyed on the first and last week. This project was designed to equip, enable, and empower the laity to be participants in the worship experience that would enhance outreach in the local church. The project was designed around actions that were translated into acts of worship: equipping and encouraging greeters, sharing a life story or personal testimony, dramatic presentations on a youth Sunday and during the celebration of the first Sunday of Advent and Thanksgiving. Using narrative methods, the researcher studied five Presbyterian congregations that are flourishing in the aftermath of decreased membership. Visitation teams were trained to visit in the homes of the shut-in members of two churches in Central Pennsylvania.  These teams visited twelve members and took the Sacrament of Holy Communion to the people.  The results of our work revealed the 90% of the absent members were delighted to be visited, by the Lay Visitation Teams and to receive Communion. Cathedrals are houses of prayer for all who come, whether they are pilgrims, tourists, church-wary attendees, or regular worshippers. This thesis finds that preaching in a way which is attentive to these guests is empowering for the faith of the regular cathedral worshipper. Those who live a life of faith bring many of the same questions and concerns as the guests from the secular, postmodern world.
