Four small groups produced a custom-made lectionary, collected related reference materials, and provided the pastor with weekly exegetical and presentation ideas, supporting materials, and feedback on proposed sermons. The pastor's increase in satisfaction and reduction in frustration with the overall sermon preparation process indicated positive change. It begins with a description of an emerging American Buddhism that is the basis for this proposed homiletic and a brief explanation of some foundational concepts of Buddhism. It then explores what Buddhist scripture and tradition contribute to three aspects of homiletics: purposes of preaching, hermeneutics, and crafting the sermon. Part of the examination deals with how biblical teaching interacts with economic theory. The biblical themes of creation, the covenants, and the community of God are analyzed with respect to biblical principles. Because of their fears and differences they have only engaged the community of Benton Harbor, Michigan in nominal ways. The thesis focuses on interviews conducted, using the research method of Narrative Inquiry, with people from Union Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church and Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ. I interviewed a cross-section of both churches using Narrative Inquiry as an approach to identify similarities. My final chapter shares the story of the tensions between the two cities. For this project the author celebrated the Lord's Supper during his church's regular service for six consecutive weeks. Special attention was given to the use of music, multimedia, and liturgy so the flow of worship would move the congregants to celebration of the sacrament. Pastor-spiritual directors, elders, and scholars in spirituality were interviewed. The author explored his congregation's historical and sociological setting. His findings indicate a disconnection between reason and spirituality. Spiritual direction is emerging in a church crisis of spiritual decline. For historical perspective, he turned to John Calvin, Karl Rahner, and Howard Thurman. Additional insights came from biblical study, spiritual theologians, and contemporary church leaders. This project considers how a local church jail ministry team can help address this problem through a weekly recovery-focused Bible study. Serving as chaplain volunteers, a men's team and a women's team entered the jail bringing a focus on Twelve Step Recovery while examining biblical roots of the steps. The cognitive behvior method of psychotherapy was used. This project developed the first part of a Chaplain's Academy that focuses on the 'Foundations of Law Enforcement Chaplaincy.' The project focus and scope were to plan, develop and lead the first four curriculum sessions of the Chaplain's Academy - Foundations of Law Enforcement Chaplaincy - and include the following elements: 1) The Law Enforcement Family, 2) Legal Liability/Confidentiality/Privileged Information, 3) Sensitivity and Diversity, 4) Ethics. Yet UCC congregations are polarized. The UCC is congregational; the local congregation is the 'basic unit.' Unity must be nurtured within local congregations. Rooted in the scriptural call for unity amid diversity, and built upon the work of others calling for unity in the church, the author proposes a model addressing worship, proclamation, community and service. Diversity is brought out into the open and affirmed rather than being discouraged or ignored.
