The research project invited participants to take nature photographs and reflect on them with a scripture passage, prayer or devotional thought. Each participant presented their photos and spiritual reflections to a study group for discussion. The project results were mixed, but mostly encouraging. Project participants were challenged and stretched regarding their attitudes, perceptions and theology. They became aware of essential diversity issues and personal behaviors that were incongruent with appropriate belief. They were inspired and empowered to participate and take ownership in initiating change of their own culture. The project considers the questions of what level of emotional readiness is needed to serve effectively in ministry and what limitations prohibit an individual from serving productively in parish ministry. Participants were seven adults from Good Tree Christian Fellowship who experienced an offense leading to negative emotions. The Enright Forgiveness Inventory measured changes in participants' affect, behavior, and cognition towards an offender. All participants showed growth in each domain with a group average of 26.7% in affect, 10.0% in behavior, and 8.3% in cognition. The project's purpose required a transition from a Deacon Family Ministry Plan to an identity-based deacon ministry plan. Participating deacons discovered their God-given identities through a combination of a spiritual gifts inventory, DISC Profile and one-on-one coaching provided by the candidate.
