In response to this problem the researcher first investigated Scripture's mandate to the church regarding its treatment of single mothers and their sons, as well as the related issues of poverty, loneliness, and low status. The researcher then examined literature about the causes, challenges and possible resources of single mothering. These steps informed the subsequent qualitative research project that gathered data through personal interviews, field notes, surveys, and on-site group discussions with single Hmong mothers, lay leaders, community leaders, pastors, entrepreneurs, and educators. From this data a grounded theory on the subject of single Hmong mothers emerged. A well self-defined person has clear goals, boundaries, and values. Low levels of self-differentiation negatively impact pastors ability to deal with manipulation, the herd-mentality, and relational conflict. Before and after a twelve week training course pastors were tested using three categories of Human Synergistic's Life Styles Inventory. This research project used both quantitaive and qualitative methods to determine the effect of premarital counseling combined with a couple-to-couple mentoring emphasizing self-disclosure and communication. The participants were couples who were members of the Churches of Christ and who claimed they were virgins before their marriage date.
