Project"],"creator_tesim":["Stillman, Matthew H."],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Theological seminaries","Christian education"],"abstract_tesim":["The German Reformed churches almost came to blows over the Romanizing influences of John Williamson Nevin and Philip Scaff who were the denomination’s seminary professors at Mercersburg, PA. John Bomberger and later James I. Goode had theological objections to the Evangelical Catholic reforms, so Bomberger and others opened a competing seminary called Ursinus (now Urinus College) to prepare low church clergy for the ministry in competition with Mercersburg (which later moved to Lancaster and became Lancaster Theological Seminary). My interest lies in the distinctive features of the Ursinus movement in order to determine how it had an impact on one congregation, Wolf’s Church. I hope to uncover the ways in which its theological principles encouraged certain ecclesial practices that lingered long after the controversy with the Mercersburg movement had faded from the congregation’s memory. My work answers the question, “What were the theological convictions and ecclesiastical practices of the Ursinus Movement as a response to the Mercersburg theology in its 19th century German Reformed Church context, including key figures, casual factors, salient features, features of the “Ursinus” piety/theology as distinct from Mercersburg, etc. Having identified the salient and distinctive characteristics of the Ursinus tradition, I then will explore the ways in which this heritage may have informed the ecclesial practices of Wolf’s Church and kept that legacy alive even when the congregants could not articulate the characteristics of the Ursinus tradition or even identify the theology embedded in their exposure in their corporate life as being in the Ursinus There exists a connection between attention to beauty and a commitment to justice, which both focus on God's doxa. Yet for a variety of historical and practical reasons, visual art is sidelined in most Protestant congregations. Perhaps the solution to this lack of attention to visuality comes not from placing art in churches, but in creating art within congregations. Advocating for creating visual art in congregations requires asking whether or not visual, creative activity could meet the criteria that define and describe essential Christian practices. Project"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Minasian, Susan A."],"subject_tesim":["Church history","Theology, Doctrinal"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["\"Claiming Lives of Peace When Justice is Denied‚\" is a theological essay on forgiveness and how the humanity of Jesus on the cross can serve as a model to clarify forgiveness as a spiritual practice. In this essay, the reader will be introduced to the denial on the part of the Turkish government and the role of the Ottoman Turkish government in the genocide of Armenians in 1915. It is my position that denial creates a burden for the survivors of genocide and other traumas. I contend that the victims need to receive a sense of agency in considering forgiveness as an on-going spiritual practice instead of an immediate destination. We will consider voices in the current conversation about forgiveness and discover that they all come to somewhat of the same conclusion that we must all forgive. Forgiveness is seen as a mandate of Christian piety and we must also be agents of forgiveness for our own wellbeing. I agree and yet find these positions to be limited. I propose that we take this saying of Jesus on the cross, \"Father, forgive them for they know not what they are doing,\" and consider how this is his moment of emptying himself and claiming the fullness of his humanity in all of its limitations. In this moment he is praying and releasing his desire for forgiveness to God. We do not know if he refused to say \"I‚\" forgive you. Its aim is to help the spiritually curious, newcomers, and regular church attenders develop a more informed understanding of the Christian faith, particularly through the lens of the Reformed Church in America (RCA). My research for this paper began at Marble Collegiate Church (RCA) in Manhattan—a large, urban church context. In the summer of 2011, I began my ministry as a solo pastor at The Community Reformed Church (CRC) at Manhasset, NY, a small, suburban congregation just outside of New York City. The Explorer’s Handbook and formative process that comprise my doctoral work both emerge from and serve both types of settings. Stagnation and the lack of growth were problematic. If spiritual formation of the individual and church community could put back what was missing in the lives of broken individuals in the church community, then this could have an impact on church growth. The researcher collected qualitative data through a spiritual assessment profile, surveys, interviews, and spiritual discipline training. Data results suggested positive changes in pastoral and participants attitudes.
