During an eight month period (September 2013 - April 2014) I led my congregation in intentional outreach to two specific under-represented populations that we wished to reach - men and the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community. The goal of the project was to reach out to these groups to express our welcome and discover ways to involve them in the life of our congregation. The intent was to live out our belief in welcome and hospitality which Jesus demonstrated through his life and ministry. A men's fellowship was formed for the duration of the project. They chose to meet monthly for breakfast and conversation as a way to strengthen their bonds and create an opportunity to meet new people. A new church committee, the Open and Affirming (ONA) Action committee, was formed to intentionally reach out to the LGBT population. They created visual displays within the church building, hosted an outreach luncheon, and participated in a regional conference for LGBT youth. Both the men's fellowship and the ONA Action committee discovered that hospitality needed to be expressed both verbally and with actions in order to reflect the belief of our congregation that 'all are welcome' in God's sight."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Hartford Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8e52e4c8-38b6-4846-872d-a744b4f5725d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720262090883072,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:03:10.671Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:45:20Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:34:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3cb7a75b-6ba8-4b81-b2e3-cddad5a1320e","accessControl_ssim":["38134887-7362-4a3c-8cde-8ac6698a89dd"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Equipping selected members of First Baptist Church, Greenville, Mississippi, in cross-cultural mission skills"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:45:19Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:53:24Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5f3c3b6b-a13a-4a4b-8887-a078bfb304a7"],"hasLease_ssim":["97f06f9c-32f7-4a7b-b209-b9f379938cf8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Kenneth B Taylor"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gerald S Burke"],"publisher_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Cross-cultural studies","Mission of the church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this project was to equip selected members of the First Baptist Church, Greenville, Mississippi (FBCG), in cross-cultural mission skills. Recommendation for teaching spiritual warfare was stressed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799715271648215040,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:43:51.415Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:44:17Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:00:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"40f131f0-6b84-4ce3-b26c-542e36ee02ef","accessControl_ssim":["82266065-d81b-45cd-8947-4d4df582a7bc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing sermon application from Old Testament narratives"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:44:16Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:00:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8b7094bc-90b1-4204-a850-9ad58517a31a"],"hasLease_ssim":["77e4bdb6-3b5a-4469-8381-f4d73b27c6c1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Greg R Scharf"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Cyrus Y Ng"],"keyword_tesim":["Preaching--Theory"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Narrative theology","Bible--Criticism, interpretation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Developing sermon applications is challenging, because it demands that preachers bridge the immense gap between the ancient text and the modern audience. The task appears even more challenging when preaching Old Testament narratives, because this genre usually does not offer obvious statements from which preachers can formulate applications. What kind of lessons should be drawn from biblical narratives? How does the preacher develop hermeneutically sound and contemporarily relevant applications from this genre? The project centered around two goals: to enhance the congregants' competence in applying OT narratives to their lives; and to improve the quality of sermon applications in the project writer's preaching. The project implemented proposed theories by developing and delivering a sermon series on Genesis 37-50 in the project writer's congregation. A focus group, and evaluative questionnaires were implemented, and revealed a progressive improvement of applications over the course of the preaching series."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799716347115995136,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:00:57.061Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:44:15Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T01:49:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7167f752-a81d-42d4-ad4f-df96be6ee267","accessControl_ssim":["e56ac64d-1fd0-400e-a7cc-0753c184b58f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Under old management: a biblical guide to leading change in the church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:44:09Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:27:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["9eac22b3-0ed6-4ff0-9d69-292700be105d"],"hasLease_ssim":["25439eba-2a1c-4f48-9afd-9477bd339c95"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Greg R Scharf"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Alex L Cobb"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Holy Spirit","Social change","Church renewal","Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["How do we honor our unchanging God and His unchanging word in an ever-changing world requiring ever-changing methodologies?
