This project focuses on three congregations and how they responded to the inclusion of popular culture in worship and small group studies. This report surveys three churches that engaged popular culture as a lens through which to encounter God and a way to see God active in the world around them. The researcher collected data from multiple sources including ethnographic interviews and field research with participant observations. The Oasis Chapel developed a missional identity and stepped out to help the survivors in Minamisanriku after the Great East Japan Earthquake. The research method used was qualitative case studies of two churches who opened five campuses in a seven year period.The thesis of this dissertation asserted that certain ingredients exist that, when mixed together, result in accelerating the development of a leader. One hypothesis of this research was that there was a relationship between the level of risk and the level of trust which are contributing factors empowering Airmen. The second hypothesis was that there was a relationship between the level of respect and the level of leadership which are contributing factors empowering Airmen. Through a retreat, individuals engage in contemplative creative expression as a tool for spiritual formation and transformation. Working in collaboration with JustPeace, the United Methodist's Center for Mediation and Conflict Transformation, the retreat model was reviewed by the organization for use in the work of transforming congregational conflict. Senior pastors need the vision and compelling communication of the vision for a multiethnic church. They need a commitment to and the skill to empower leaders. And they need a system of assessing potential leaders that includes cultural IQ. Using the case study method, two senior pastors were interviewed who have a track record of multiplying leaders to grow their churches. By taking thirty adult (ages 21 and older), American, Christian women through a period of evangelical catechesis, my project indicated that catechized women demonstrate a greater knowledge of biblical and theological concepts than before the implementation of the program.
