The writer first reported in the thesis various ways a minister could locate sermon illustrations from publications and personal life experiences.  Second, the author presented methods to catalog sermon illustrations for future use; that is, to catalog by subject or lectionary topics.  Third, the author presented forty criteria to be observed on how to best select and use a particular illustration in a sermon. A curriculum was developed and a four-phase process of recruitment was developed and followed in order to test the thesis in one local United Methodist church.  Foster parents were recruited and began to function.  The theology undergirding the project, including a discussion of the church-state issue, is included. A survey questionnaire addressing the issue of pastoral presence was administered personally to 101 randomly chosen ministers of the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference.  Twenty-two of this group were given further opportunity of an oral response in an open interview.  Positive and negative trait patterns were identified by these pastors. The study reviews both Jungian typology, upon which the MBTI is based, and the instrument itself. This project provided the justification for and the procedures by which the Shiloh Baptist Church, Chesterfield County, Virginia, created this system.  The result was the implementation of a manual of operations for the church and the development of a positive image for the congregation. Much of this results from an imbalance in ministerial style.  The traditional style of ministry has an excessive analytical, logical approach.  What is needed is a balancing of this approach with an intuitive, relational, in-depth type of awareness.  Ministry which involves a balanced awareness has many implications. Application can take place in sermon preparation, worship experiences, pastoral care, and organnizational planning. Meditative experiences are especially congruent for encouraging a balance.
