Three primary sources of expectations are surveyed: the scriptures, Baptist traditions, and contemporary Baptist expectations concerning pastoral ministry.  A profile of contemporary expectations is available through international research reported in Ministry in America (1980).  Research among Mid-American Baptists by the author corroborates the international results. A distinction is made between the management of the church as an institution and the management of ministry. Local church teachers participated in an individual and group reflection process  based on Thomas Groome's 'shared praxis' approach.  Pre- and post-process measurements indicated an increase in the teachers' valuing of their own faith experience, satisfaction in teaching and sense of purpose of teaching. It was applied to narratives collected from three groups discussing dreams and two groups discussing religious concerns at two nursing homes. It proved to be consistently useful in opening both dreams and biblical narratives to discussion and interpretation.
