A detailed decadal statistical study of its largest 200 churches was made along with demographic and other cultural data to illustrate the trends that are presently acting upon its ministry. A survey was taken of a number of churches and pastors in urban, suburban and rural areas to gain an understanding of the relationship of preaching to moral decision making.  Out of this a determination of satisfaction with pulpit ministry was compared to satisfaction with other pastoral functions. Work with the parish's Christian Service Task Force prompted research leading to the use of a pastoral letter by Bishop Howard Hubbard, and to Robert Greenleaf's Servant leadership. A synthesis of these sources produced a role description of the parish priest as that of affirming, coordinating and facilitating the lay ministry by fulfilling a 'first among equals' role in the context of the parish council. Taking a traditionalist path of research, the author presents witness from the Bible, Councils, and fathers of the undivided Church for ecumenism as a movement integral to the church's covenant in the world.
