The shift has enhanced the ends of marriage to acknowledge and include the importance of partnership and community. This project explains a contemporary understanding of the sacrament of marriage. Additionally, it presents the John Gottman research-based marital therapy process. It demonstrates the strong correlations between a Roman Catholic theology of marriage and Gottman's Sound Marital House theory. Awareness for the need for such a ministry arose when the author discovered how few shelters accept homeless families. It occurred to the author that the church has an obligation to keep these families intact, especially during the trying ordeal of a homeless crisis. Ethnographic and pro-active research methods were employed in a effort to bring together a healthy mix of objective and subjective information. The research was offered in the form of a project paper to a control group consisting of laypersons in the congregation. At the close of the session, a forced option questionnaire was distributed to determine feasibility. Twenty of the twenty-one participants believed, based upon the information gathered, that the ministry was feasible. The author studied this integrated approach to spiritual formation through a case study methodology involving thirteen volunteers who spent eight weeks 'breathing in' through weekly sessions of prayer, Bible study, and reflection, and 'breathing out' through weekly trips to a homeless shelter. Data was collected through observations, questionnaires, interviews, and journals. The author found this thesis confirmed in every respect. This study asks: what is the nature of the spiritual life of the clergy spouse? and it raises interesting questions and discussion about the unique clergy family and their 'pastoral' relationship. The author/researcher approached this project from a case study methodology involving thirteen participant clergy spouses. Data were collected through extensive literature review, questionnaires, a sanctuary exchange program and journaling. In structuring teaching, regular worship, and focused discussions, a group of congregational leaders journeyed together through Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Lent, Easter, and Pentecost, noting their faith experiences and encouraging one another in faithful living.
