This thesis provides a practical method for the consistent study of the scripture text used in worship. The research attempted to seek out the utilization of certain formative spiritual disciplines which have been historically used by men and women of the church. This research also sought to identify what other, if any, spiritual disciplines and/or habits are being used today as a methodology for spiritual formation. The study sought also, to evaluate those findings in light of the biblical call to renewal and the use and practice of those disciplines, in varying degrees, by John Wesley, a significant theological mentor of the men and women serving in ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. The study was guided by three research questions: 1) What are the methods of personal spiritual renewal being utilized today by itinerant evangelists in the Church of the Nazarene? 2) Are these factors which influence the methods that are being used? 3) In what ways are current formative practices among itinerant ministers in the Church of the Nazarene, USA, congruent or incongruent with a biblical view of personal spiritual renewal among ministers and with the historical Christian tradition? The research considered several variables to ascertain their influence on the current practices of spiritual formation among itinerant evangelists. Those variables were tenure, age, gender, itinerant evangelism as means of support, number of revival meetings held annually, certification, spouse or teammate accompanied travel, educational training. The findings of this study revealed a strong commitment to the principles of the spiritual disciplines."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134613541748736,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:37:58.161Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:17:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bcae52b8-75ef-4967-ba13-6eb98ff24f9a","accessControl_ssim":["05b9aa7b-4f91-43e2-be64-1a69239e64da"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A grief gone public: the church as midwife in the journey of mourning"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:34:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["53bf67f8-df7b-4165-aaa2-4ea90f6a5154"],"hasLease_ssim":["54b0579f-454c-408f-b9b6-d7c5a61dd71b"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gale Poindexter","Urias H Beverly"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Yvette W Hensley"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Grief","Second Baptist Church (Columbus, Ohio)","Pastoral counseling--Study and teaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This explanatory research examined the helpfulness of bereavement education in equipping individuals in a predominantly African-American church setting to cope with grief. The hypothesis was that biblical preaching which connects with Generation X could be identified by means of two elements. First, it is identified by the ways in which it seeks to address the distinguishing characteristics of Generation X people. Second, it can be identified by specific qualities inherent in the act of preaching to Generation X people. The research project involved listening to and evaluating thirty sermons preached by Generation X practitioners. Three sermons were solicited from each of ten practitioners chosen for study. Each was evaluated for their method of preaching. Specific evaluation categories wer related to sermon content, sermon delivery, and the degree to which the sermon was modeled after the teaching style of Jesus. Two specific sermon evaluation tools were designed and used in the course of this study. Each evaluates the sermon in eleven evaluation categories using the Likert scale method and provides the opportunity for the collection of anecdotal evidence as well. This study led to the development of a specific model to be used in preaching to postmodern people. This model is make up of four critical qualities of preaching. The first quality of this model is preaching that is Scripture-steeped; postmodern preaching must develop the means to help people experience the Scriptures. Second, postmodern preaching must be relationally engaging; it must draw people toward the process of journeying and growing in community together. Third, it must be highly relevant; our preaching must relate to the individual life of the hearer as well as the wider cultural context. Finally, postmodern preaching must become multi-dimensional; it must deliver truth in a variety of ways which communicate with different personalities and senses through various media."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134780417376256,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:40:37.306Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:49:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:01:43Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6c6bfc63-9874-4c43-b18d-fa9f90b95500","accessControl_ssim":["cf4173a2-195f-478e-962d-4d6a6e3745ba"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Daring to cross the barrier: a hermeneutic paradigm for multicultural church partnering for Christian ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:49:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:18:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e55c59a3-7cc6-4618-ab80-4a1f187eae1e"],"hasLease_ssim":["02a2ae21-9ecf-4bcf-80ba-ce784e3420b9"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Terry Thomas","Ricky A Woods"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Charlene Hendricks"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Cultural pluralism","Church work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The objective of this ministry model was to bring into dialogue people of diverse cultures to affect attitudinal changes toward each other, crossing color-line barriers. The conclusion is that a lack of knowledge of diverse cultures causes negative attitudinal barriers between people of God."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128562038734848,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:01:46.997Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:49:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:53:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3b1545fa-271d-4007-86ac-3dd4573ddef9","accessControl_ssim":["70fe3f35-82ca-4554-b91a-518a1028e61a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Intergenerational and multigenerational parenting: its strengths, struggles, and survival"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:49:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:50:39Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["96d3be80-6b56-46d2-88d2-fb9d1eaea3cd"],"hasLease_ssim":["08467837-a018-40b1-b639-a596afea1ace"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Gale Poindexter","Urias H Beverly"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Faye A Taylor"],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with families","Wayman Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church (Dayton, Ohio)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project focused on the development of an intergenerational and multigenerational model of ministry that will equip parents and grandparents to elevate their strengths, process their struggles, and affirm the tenacity to survive.
