When these relationships are not possible in a pastor's ministry setting, then distance sermon coaching--using telephone, e-mail, cassette tapes--can help pastors continue to improve homiletical skills. The project provides the theological and theoretical background for such an approach. Favoring the insiders' perspective, it explores needs assessment and participant observation as tools for initial (outsider) pastoral listening in a Mexicano Catholic immigrant faith community in southern Colorado. Through a critical review of leadership research and a word study, it relates stakeholder findings to Joseph Rost's relational concept of leadership, as well as to Ronald Heifetz's leadership task of promoting adaptive change. For a problem that is so prevalent, the church has been slow to minister to people who are experiencing the crisis of separation and divorce, especially from the pulpit. The Mission Society informs the congregation of mission work and mission opportunities in the United States and abroad. The task of the Mission Society is to educate and challenge individuals to serve in missions wherever possible. A brief study of the congregation's constitution indicates that missions must be clearly defined as the prime purpose for the congregation's being. Further information reveals a variety of Mission Societies to accomplish that purpose. Many serve missions in concert with the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod, others serve agencies apart from Synodical structure. The theological study of 'God's mission' contributes to the scriptural knowledge of the student. Students discover God's worldview and His cross-cultural churches of the first century. The project provides assistance to the pastor in carrying out his ministerial task of Word and Sacrament. It increases awareness of mission challenges within the community, the Circuit, the District and the Synod. Foreign and local missions receive the benefit of the congregation's total participation in the undertaking.
