To do this, a “semantic differential” scale was designed and tested in various congregations including those of a liturgical tradition as well as those without such a formal heritage. The scale was used by laypersons to indicate their responses to specific video-taped gestures of their minister in the process of preaching a sermon in worship which they attended. Scores from the scale were then used as a basis for discussions between the laity and their minister concerning the ways in which his gestures were being understood. Three congregations, along with their ministers, became more aware of the relationship between verbal content and non-verbal gestures used during the preaching event. The project was conducted with only those persons who had the capacity both to listen and to see what was happening during the sermon. Personas who had either a visual handicap or a hearing impairment were not selected for participation."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860256933543936,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:04.611Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"dc38a6b2-098c-4419-b38f-b7770152a900","accessControl_ssim":["ac102d82-28ee-4919-821c-3ab966c78f2b"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Developing a local church operations manual: a model process"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["380f412d-9da8-4b91-b9e3-ea7211125ae0"],"hasLease_ssim":["536102ef-c27b-437b-8d22-583fecc7a4f6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The basic need addressed herein is discontinuity in church operations which results from frequent personnel changes. Especially, churches which exist in a highly mobile and changing society are affected by a high rate of leadership turnover; and, therefore, require some method which facilitates easy transmission of essential information and speedy adjustment of leaders to their tasks. Otherwise, the frequent turnover of leadership may result in loss of essential information, waste of valuable time and energy, and misappropriation of resources…Described herein is a process by which a local church may develop an up-to-date operations manual. The document, produced through collaboration with local church leaders, provides a systemic method to transmit information and to acclimate leaders to responsibilities and tasks necessary for continuity in church operations. Group methods, research of existing policies and information, individual interviews of persons possessing special knowledge, and other such data-gathering methods as necessary to develop an up-to-date manual are described. Additionally, this project enlarges ownership of information concerning church operations by gathering such information into one document, which is presented for official adoption by the church. Policy is removed from individual control, thereby diffusing the potential of personality conflicts created when individuals control policy or procedure."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860257305788416,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:04.966Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"6c01c4a4-0dc1-4a6d-9cf1-d318e01a0df8","accessControl_ssim":["e31d63c4-f344-4172-bb12-786657d6aaa4"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Realistic cablevision options for a local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["32bff6d7-cf62-4367-820a-95bd6a71979c"],"hasLease_ssim":["588f59d3-49dc-4113-b1c2-b907e871e740"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Beginning in January of 1976 and continuing through December of 1978, this experimental ministry took place with the inactive members of the congregation of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville, Pennsylvania. During this three-year period the pastoral ministry in the parish was carried out in the normal manner. This project became an integral part of the parish work and was seldom mentioned, in order to avoid affecting the results. The members of the parish were aware that I was involved in a doctoral project, but very few had any knowledge of the area being studied. Further, the project did not alter the remainder of the parish program in any significant manner, with the exception of the fact that a number of the inactive members responded in some measurable way. The project is, therefore, a plan which can be readily adapted and utilized by any parish in which inactive members are a concern. My intention in this project was to explore the problem of that conflict in the parish which is related to inactive members by demonstrating that a ministry at the point of conflict or resistance would be helpful to the inactive persons involved and the parish itself, with the result that the learnings from this ministry would provide practical guidelines for pastors and churches to minister with inactive members."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248248188928,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.328Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"04606a86-b4fc-41f1-970b-16392109456d","accessControl_ssim":["1bfd956e-7fc0-4aec-ba9c-18d88adb2ab9"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The intensive retreat model: an experience aimed at facilitating spiritual growth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["520f8fb4-2b5a-4f5c-bf5e-5c96d5cc750d"],"hasLease_ssim":["20829298-6c2e-410d-bd53-170f39bb1913"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Such a map affords some general sense as to where one is headed and some insight into certain key checkpoints that can be utilized in gauging one’s movement. An overview of the scheme and anticipated development of this paper would serve the same purpose. The starting point here is the identification and the description of the basic problem which has spawned this project–namely, the fundamental estrangement of persons from their spiritual roots. This discussion occupies the first chapter and is followed by an outline in the next chapter of the theoretical foundations for a practical response to the problem. The response ultimately developed here is related to the phenomenon of religious mysticism. The third chapter describes in detail the Intensive Retreat, a model constructed for the purpose of enabling spiritual encounter and patterned on the mystical route. The next chapter reports on the data-gathering completed on the final experimental trials with the Intensive Retreat model and elaborates on certain hypotheses related to that model, while the final chapter considers conclusions and implications that have been suggested by the overall experience of this project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248347803648,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.422Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a369f67d-8c9b-44c5-9207-ec78c3eab95e","accessControl_ssim":["8d591870-955f-4673-a9df-f0343d11cebf"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The relationship of unresolved grief to crisis in marriage: help for the pastor/counselor. Such grief will be defined and clarified in psychological terms, emphasizing the importance of resolving the grief by expressing the full range of emotions associated with it. It will be shown through several case studies that unresolved grief, the inhibition of natural feelings occasioned by the death of a loved one, may be a factor in marital crises. The Southern Baptist Convention is currently in the midst of Bold Mission Thrust. One objective of this emphasis is to “evangelize and congregationalize.”...In October of 1978, the Sunday School Board of the Southern Baptist Convention also began a program emphasis targeted towards single adults. Although this project began independently from the above emphasis, it is hoped that the process may be a beneficial tool to those local congregations that wish to respond to these denominational emphases."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860247953539072,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.047Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"3a3ad223-2af7-4d5d-b125-0c38a77e192b","accessControl_ssim":["25a253ae-15bd-42f4-bd27-f3d7def0d7c2"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Short-term learning opportunities in an overseas union church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:50Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["815f3270-ea8b-42e8-b8fc-2143867384a6"],"hasLease_ssim":["5eda801f-5241-41e5-a5f7-01937758f25d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1978"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Appropriate control groups using alternate procedures for preparation were also established, and testing instruments were developed…The hypothesis which the project was created to test, then, is whether understanding of the Biblical texts and appreciation of Sunday worship can be significantly increased by advance preparation, even if the activity is undertaken for only a short-term period."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248083562496,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.171Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"073018bc-c217-4582-b13c-0f894d3ccbee","accessControl_ssim":["f6844c0f-76f5-4cdd-b200-807fd3eae849"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Intensive Journal: a new tool for ministry. The project upon which this report is based centers on the author’s own experience in the use of the Intensive Journal as a pastor since 1975 and on a survey of selected pastors, seminarians, and laity who have been introduced to the Intensive Journal method. The objectives of this report are the following: to describe the Intensive Journal method and evaluate it from the viewpoint of the Christian faith and ministry; to describe and evaluate its practical life of the pastor and as a tool for ministry in the local church; and to make observations, recommendations, and suggestions for future use of the Intensive Journal by pastors."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860240728850432,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:49.157Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:45Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:48Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"39d80ffa-5945-4ff6-93d1-9941da45474e","accessControl_ssim":["3a5c146a-1d2b-40df-98f2-eb63e3e73063"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["A manual for use by churches seeking new pastoral leadership"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:44Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2e60ca9d-3cd1-4eba-9900-9e8280e1cc9d"],"hasLease_ssim":["7e7e309a-f4cf-4018-a6a8-b1e58603037e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1978"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Since that time I have been personally involved on two occasions in the placement process of the United Church of Christ. After my initial entry, I have made one other move within my adopted denomination. The second placement was accomplished while this doctoral project was in progress. I perceive inadequacies in the placement process of the United Church of Christ, differing in nature from the deficiencies of the United Methodist process. No placement system devised by the mind of man can work perfectly. But my personal experience in two dissimilar systems aids in analyzing the merits of placement practices of the United Church of Christ. Two major studies of placement in the United Church of Christ have been conducted by the Research Center in Religion and Society, located at Lancaster Theological Seminary. The first study, “Placement and Deployment of Professionals in the United Church of Christ,” was conducted in 1973. The second study, “Pastoral Search Committees,” was conducted in 1975. These studies identify problems in the placement process in the United Church of Christ that match my own experience. This project is an attempt to deal with the problems identified in those earlier projects. The study on search committees suggests that probably the most serious omission committees make is in not adequately preparing for their tasks (e.g. preparing statements of needs and goals, conducting studies of the congregations, deciding the qualifications they want the minister to have, preparing a job description) before interviewing a candidate. This study suggests that committees seeking a pastor seem unaware of the professional qualifications that they want their pastor to have, or how to describe qualifications adequately. As a result, many committees make their final decisions on more than subjective impressions about the personality of the candidate."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860240738287616,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:49.161Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
