The setting is western Chesterfield County, Virginia, whose population will grow from 14,700 to 32,700 in the next ten years. The author is the founding pastor of a United Methodist Church chartered in 1987 in Chesterfield. Two challenges provided the impetus for the project. One, finding a common religious practice among a diverse people, and two, expanding participation in the liturgy. Advent and Christmas Eve worship services were selected to meet both challenges. Contemporary homiletics focuses on the form of the sermon by applying the knowledge of communication and good storytelling to the biblical text in order to make the sermon interesting and relevant to the modern audience. The study of preaching that examines the spiritual power behind the sermon and also the spiritual powers of darkness that attempt to hinder the reception of the gospel has received much less attention in contemporary study. After completing a theological reflection of these issues and a literature review of relevant material, this study will examine the issue of worldview and establish that the western worldview is incomplete and inconsistent with the biblical account. Second, having established the existence and influence of spiritual powers in the world, the study will examine the role of the Holy Spirit as he gives spiritual power to preaching. Third, the study will examine the particular ways in which the kingdom of darkness attempts to hinder the reception of the preaching of the gospel. Fourth, the study will examine the role of prayer in the life of the preacher and its relationship to preaching. Fifth, the study will propose a number of foundational principles for preaching, in light of the cosmological reality. The thesis begins by showing that preparation teams are in-line with direct and indirect emphasis of Scripture. Principles for the effective function of a preparation team are drawn from business literature about teams. The work also includes a survey of pastors with experience in a sermon preparation team. To this end, a questionnaire entitled 'MONEYMATTERS' was developed as a tool to help ministers and Christian counselors determine the underlying motives and accompanying behaviour patterns which govern a person's use of money and in fact, their whole outlook on life. This thesis analyzes 201 questionnaires submitted by parishioners of ten 'Main Line' congregations in southern New Hampshire/Northeastern Massachusetts.  The findings were that all but two respondents believed in healing through prayer though they differed about its frequency, and that a sizable minority reported experiencing healing.  Such belief in and experience of such healing was generally consistent across various demographic categories. Since sanctification is a continuing process of change involving both the individual and the society, peacemaking provides the substance and direction of this process of change. In a context of war/conflict, such as what is currently obtaining in the Philippines, peacemaking is the way to proclaim the Good News and to witness to Gods redeeming love. It is the contention of the author, however, that the local churches are neither oriented nor equipped to participate in peacemaking. It is therefore important that strong formational programs have to be launched towards this purpose, targeting pastors, lay preachers, Sunday School teachers and leaders of lay organizations. The critical balance between church and family in relation to God's kingdom was considered, with the conclusion that God's purpose for the family and the church should be observed through the lens of His kingdom program. A major goal of the project was to determine how the church could build stronger families, so the composition of a strong family was delineated. Healthy families were considered from a sociological and biblical viewpoint and six essential traits were presented as the benchmark for evaluating a church's ministry to families. A case study of Immanuel Bible Church was undertaken in order to learn more about how one church was ministering to families, thus providing a practical element to the research process. However, facing the new millennium, the Korean churches need to be more matured and renewed for the growth in quality by the training of the congregation to be disciples of Jesus Christ. So, the main focus of this paper is to analyze John Wesley's theological background that made possible his reforming movement, and to investigate the way he developed this tool of renewal, namely, the class meeting. In light of this analysis, the author evaluates whether such a method is still feasible for the contemporary Korean churches today. This project examines the biblical and theological foundations of the local church and examines the social and psychological factors necessary when developing new ethnic missions.  These factors were discussed in Chapters 2 and 3. Church planting is a process whereby a church is planted by a local church through a cooperative endeavor of a pastor, members of the local church and the Holy Spirit.  To strategize about church planting, a Mission task Committee, consisting of eight pastors, was organized.  Chapter Four presented a synopsis of seven seminars on various biblical and theoretical principles for church planting. Chapter five evaluated the methodology used in planting ethnic ministries.
