The biblical, historical and current cultural context for the church is examined. This study shows that hospitality when placed in a ministry context for laity empowers them to be a welcoming church. The underlying conviction of the project is that spiritual character development must be a major priority in the church. The project involved working with a small group task force within the author's local church.  This nine-member group participated in a ten-week study course that focused on spiritual character development.  After the project was completed the report was written and evaluated. The central theological issue studied was the doctrine of the church, especially the priesthood of all believers. The results of the project will be measured in the life of the author's church and in his ministry. This thesis maintains that women meet God in the ordinary experiences of daily living and that these encounters are often overlooked, ignored, or diminished. Fifty-eight memories of God from childhood through adulthood are recorded in the women's own voices. The implicit challenge in this model is for the church to discover ways in which persons can continue to hear God's call in the ambiguity of their lives and find ever new and creative ways to respond to the living God on their own faith journey. God knelt in front of us to wash our feet.  Even though we do not always understand the truth, this truth made us Christian and commands us to be servants.  Who wants to be a servant of people?  There are few people in modern America who hear the call to be a servant of God and God's people.  The model of servanthood in the life of Jesus is used to inform the ministry of the local church in which the author is pastor through training and education, and the process of ministry in conflicts. In this project, a vision formation process created leverage for systemic assessment and energy channeling. The researcher preached a series of thirteen sermons to a church in Toronto, Canada. The same sermon was preached to two congregations each Sunday.  In one of the services the theme was illustrated by 35mm slides; in the alternate service, the same illustration was preached without visual support.
