Two issues--the nature of God's Word and the nature of men and women as listeners--supply the theological foundation for listening to biblical preaching or teaching, which is discussed in chapter two. A third chapter surveys the literature of listening, noting especially the limited contributions of sacred writers in contrast to the extensive resources available from secular perspectives. The work includes several tools to help pastors and churches who would like to train their people in listening. These include a discussion of preaching on listening, along with several sermons; a small group study on listening to preaching; and a three hour listening seminar. The final chapter provides a summary of what the author learned through this study and suggestions for training church members in listening. This work proposes that training church members in effective listening has the potential to significantly improve the reception and application of God's Word in people's lives."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130206482726912,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:27:55.261Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:15:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:04:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4d1b37d4-59e2-4ee2-82de-83b55df33dae","accessControl_ssim":["83e65269-fdef-4d58-a4a8-fc0879719923"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["'A still place of your presence': building intentional community for prayer"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:15:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:23:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3df3d6d7-9f15-4c9e-949c-58b4ff5f5c09"],"hasLease_ssim":["881447f4-7d29-48ac-a63e-76022e7dbf21"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Arthur Thomas","Lucy Lind Hogan"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The research element of the project consists of interviews with thirteen mission leaders, seeking to determine if there is agreement on what a leader is and what his qualities and characteristics should be. The interview also seeks to understand how potential missionary leaders are identified and then developed for future positions on the mission fields. Various conclusions are drawn from the results of the interviews and both general and particular recommendations are suggested for further study or action on IM's part. These include the need to make leadership identification and development a major element in the future development of the Christian and Missionary Alliance (CM) missions program; the need to have a mission-wide study to agree upon and understand the key elements that constitute leadership; a reevaluation of the regional director's role and function with more emphasis placed on his role in developing field leaders."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["c654e922-76d0-4427-ac29-e286b7997781"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721164142018560,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:17:30.935Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:14:49Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:14:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b03c62d6-f4b9-496f-b0a7-e272dc926ba2","accessControl_ssim":["a987c43d-d438-4477-832e-035267c0d40d"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing home group leader coaches at Crossroads United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:14:49Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:12:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["138c175e-2e2e-427f-a044-d71049ae1329"],"hasLease_ssim":["40eafcb6-da6a-4521-8ae7-d498ff2a61dc"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["United Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael B Slaughter","Thomas Tumblin"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Cordle, Stephen H."],"publisher_tesim":["United Theological Seminary (OH)"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Crossroads United Methodist Church (Oakdale, Pa)","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project was designed to address the need for training of home group leader coaches at Crossroads United Methodist Church in Oakdale, Pennsylvania, Eight training sessions were developed and taught to the coaches to help them encourage and equip the small group leaders they were assigned to supervise. The seminar was entitled 'Closeness Through Communication' and focused on communication as being essential in generating marital closeness. The fifteen participating couples were African-Americans and members and friends of a local church. The participants completed the pretest questionnaire prior to the communication instruction. The followup was held forty-one days after the workshop and the posttest questionnaire was completed by the same participating couples. The seminar focused on the communication skills, Sensitivity, Openness, Negotiation and Appreciation, which were the modules for the one-day workshop, with accompanying activities. Findings indicated that the couples in this group did not show a significant change in their marital relationships during the forty-one day followup, according to the t-Test and f-Test statistical procedures. Positive changes occurred between the couples in sensitivity, openness and negotiation but not in appreciation skills. Differences also were noted in the changes among the couples based on their education and number of years married."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134073404522496,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:29:23.046Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:14:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:43:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"5cfd131c-7f1f-4a23-8e4f-2877e77298d4","accessControl_ssim":["b3ddf6b7-abe6-459b-89dd-cf7819b9a591"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Native Americans, the church, and the process of urbanization"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:14:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:51:41Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c32ccc7d-73ba-456f-9e38-d462a6ea4018"],"hasLease_ssim":["e4c4f3c3-652b-40ef-9773-b5c8d58bbbc5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["James M Shopshire"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Five family systems concepts were applied in this project: homeostasis, boundaries, triangles, identified patient and differentiation. The project was based upon a theology of freedom that is found in Jesus Christ. It is God's mission in the power of the Spirit through the church. The world is a system of interactions. Conflict happens and reveals a need for God's mission of freedom in Jesus Christ. The project, a one year experience, included changes in programs, parlor meetings, session meetings, the completion of a Congregational Systems Inventory, a session retreat and a peer evaluation held after the project. The result was that elders became more knowledgeable of how systems concepts could be used to change our church family system. Communication patterns improved, destructive triangles were eliminated, anxiety was reduced and the church became energized, playful, and spiritually renewed."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128261556699136,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:57:00.436Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
