The secondary goal was to discover significant elements in the experience for the purpose of redesigning the event so that the potential for Christian growth might be maximized. The first learning was that the measurement of significant changes in Christian maturity requires a longer period of time than a one week experience. The second learning was the surprise: participants dislearned. They were apparently less sure of answers to questions after the event than they were before it. The project demonstrated for Presbyterian Border Ministry some of the ways in which its immersion events are flawed. Analysis demonstrates that when the Mexican community is directly involved with the project, changes are most likely to occur in how US Christians view themselves and their faith."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135168249987072,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:46:47.172Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:41Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:50:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b607c216-3349-401d-92ef-903244db8967","accessControl_ssim":["ac5b767a-04b4-4d45-b32f-7c3c98b77aab"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Pluralism in the church: problem or promise?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:40Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:23:06Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["263cdba5-65f6-4d72-881d-9c8c406a8884"],"hasLease_ssim":["4236eb95-96fc-4b34-a28f-ca75ff8217b6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Terry C Muck","John E Alsup"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Roger T Quillin"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Religious pluralism","Consensus","Communities--Religious aspects","Christian ethics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["In an age of theological diversity and moral pluralism, is it any longer possible to define a central core of Christian beliefs and behaviors which are 'necessary' for all Christians to affirm and follow, or to set any boundaries to Christian faith and practice beyond which one may not go and still remain a Christian? If it is, who decides what the center and those boundaries are? The church needs a model which accepts as a cultural given the moral autonomy of the individual, yet which also believes the Christian community has a significant role to play in helping its members make their moral decisions. Since moral authority no longer comes from the 'top down,' does that mean the church must leave each individual alone to be his/her own authority on all moral issues? Data was obtained from adult and youth class discussions and from information gathered by distributing the 'parish profile inventory' to one-half of Covenant's membership. A summary of all the data collected provides a portrait of Covenant UMC. By examining and analyzing this portrait, one may better understand who Covenant is and what Covenant may desire to become. The three models are: science vs religion; science as religion; and religion or theology as science. There is, then, a discussion of the dialogue past, present, and a suggested future of the dialogue. The heart of the project is the theological integration of the concepts and ideas that come from the literature together with reflection upon these by the author. The most important thread for future reflection is the concept of dialogue within the postmodern setting. It is in the postmodern world that security and truth can be part of religion as well as science. With the realization that even science is a set of relative truths, humankind can be free of the need for certainty as such. This freedom can lead us to even greater horizons of security within the truth of the faith. Our freedom from the need for certainty in religious truths can allow humankind to be free to say the 'yes' to all creation that creation's God empowered us to say."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135260718661633,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:15.357Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:48:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"794db1b3-c456-45af-a4fc-2ea8072e95db","accessControl_ssim":["70367661-7ae6-496f-874f-eb6cfaa5cf16"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["That the fruit might be perfected: liturgical catechesis and a local church curriculum"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:42:02Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["445251c3-d3dc-4fe3-bb69-f2ff04547c4b"],"hasLease_ssim":["783a1498-2871-4764-8944-8d4c1cac81b6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John R Hendrick","J Frederick Holper"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["T Randall Smith"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Education--Curricula","Worship","Communities--Religious aspects","Catechetics","Christian education"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The author proposes that a division has arisen in the life of the church between the liturgical, or worship, dimension of the community of faith and its catechesis, or community-forming, dimension. This division has weakened the church's ability to witness for the gospel. After examining several modern attempts to overcome this problem, the author adopts one of these attempts, the faith community approach, and proposes to use it in a modified form to examine the curriculum of a local congregation. Using an understanding of curriculum advanced by Maria Harris and Susanne Johnson, the author defines curriculum as 'the whole life of the Church as it is manifested in a congregation's worship, instruction, and praxis in explicit, implicit, and unacknowledged ways.' The author seeks to indicate how a local congregation's life would be impacted by such a definition and understanding to create what the author calls liturgical catechesis. Finally, the author examines the implications of liturgical catechesis for pastors, local congregations, seminaries, and judicatories, and offers some theological reflections on the subject."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135253375483904,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:08.354Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:40Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:51:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ff03c5c1-57db-4e88-baae-a325b347bc99","accessControl_ssim":["e1308d05-5aa1-4021-8c18-4e6ce930771e"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Providing guidance to young adults who are contemplating marriage"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:39Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:25:27Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c2277b11-0362-4e3b-b6cf-e5bd68d6947a"],"hasLease_ssim":["bed285a2-342b-4fdf-9114-59828f1831c1"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Christine Eaton Blair","Ralph L Underwood"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Dennis K Kitterman"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Marriage counseling"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The decay of our society is in a large part due to the lack of commitment, responsibility and marital stability within our society. Indicative preaching encourages a forthright, declarative sermon presentation that allows for clarity and theological reflection all at the same time. In this theory the function of the herald (kerygma) is to proclaim more than to exhort. Proclamation allows room for the individual listener to reflect, integrate, and respond to the Good News. Indicative preaching thus seeks to draw people into an intimate encounter with the Almighty, without rousing internal defense mechanisms that block communication. In this approach to homiletics it becomes an exegetical expectation for the preacher to maintain the integrity of the biblical literature, including its mode. This means adapting sermon preparation to reflect the true nature of the text. The project also presents guidelines for indicative preaching for the parish pastor and a series of six sermons. The guidelines are meant to be practical hints to facilitate the incorporation of indicative preaching into the local parish ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135304408629248,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:48:57.022Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:49:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a70a9275-a951-4de3-bfb6-0fba44b4943b","accessControl_ssim":["8cddbddf-8efa-412e-912e-11eb91c27fb6"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The encounter of God as personal spiritual renewal"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:58:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["63430311-67c6-4107-ba0e-f28741748e89"],"hasLease_ssim":["95110be3-733a-4134-8e77-ea5f0e51fdcf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ellen L Babinsky","Robert Lively"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Robert S Bullock"],"keyword_tesim":["Theology, Reformed"],"publisher_tesim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual direction","Experience (Religion)","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Presbyterian tradition has interpreted its faith primarily through Scripture, tradition, and reason. What is essentially lacking is an appreciation for encountering God in religious experience. This project examines the importance of primary knowledge of God through mystical religious experience. Chapter 1 addresses the theological basis for encountering God within the context of Jungian psychology, William James and the Western Christian tradition. Ultimately a theology of the Christian mystical experience of union with God is framed within the Reformed positions of John Calvin and Karl Barth. The minister's role as a spiritual director is examined in chapter 2. Group experiences are suggested as an alternative or prelude to the one-on-one relationship. Selection of a curriculum and lesson plans for a spiritual encounter group are submitted in chapter 3. The story of the formation of a spiritual encounter group is told in chapter 4. Overall, the conclusions drawn value the learning experience of the project as a success for both the author and the class participants."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["0f245891-e4c1-47d9-842b-9aefbafae138"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791135340319211520,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:49:31.270Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:28:35Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e6deb317-e6d8-4e62-a93c-f975c9736f6d","accessControl_ssim":["0ca6045c-2bea-484a-bb76-b954afbffb42"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Something seen: homiletic sightings for the visual nineties"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T02:15:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:44:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d8b2163d-a8e7-4e7c-82c0-8c9b6c23f072"],"hasLease_ssim":["ec8a9ee0-ea5f-4bc0-8988-2d4095cc8d59"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"year_tesim":["1992"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Larry L Sexe"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Art and religion","Preaching, Reformed"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis explores the role art and artistic perception have in proclamation today. It specifically examines visual art as that which not only helps preachers see the situation in which proclamation happens, but as that which also gives the preacher access to the metaphors, images and symbols that are bearers of what is essential to the Christian message. Methodology includes qualitative analysis of visual portrayals of Jesus and the crucifixion, and analysis of children's drawings of Jesus from the perspective of R Arnheim's psychology of artistic perception.
