A handbook on apologetics was developed, after which it was then taught to two test groups totaling twenty-four participants.  Using a Likert-type scale, a pretest and posttest were administered to the participants to measure changes in attitude toward witnessing as a consequence of studying the handbook.  The results of the tests indicated that participants' attitude concerning their witnessing improved. The first members of the McClintock Church faced the poverty, prejudice, and persecution which surrounded all ex-slaves in the South as they adjusted to their new political freedom.  Special attention is given to the missionary efforts of the Freedmen's Committee of the Old School Presbyterian Church as it sponsored pastors and teachers in the South. The founding pastor of McClintock Church was the Rev Samuel C Alexander of Shirleysburg, Pennsylvania. The author investigated the developmental theories of Erikson, Kohlberg, Gilligan, Fowler, Perry, and Parks.  The theological/biblical background focused on biblical stories, incarnational presence, personal narrative, human sexuality, prayer, creation-centered spirituality, and process, liberation, and feminist theologies.  As models of spiritual direction the author incorporated the work of Ignatius Loyola, Teresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Studzinski, Gratton, Fischer, and Kelsey. Models of psychotherapy and pastoral counseling included Jung, Rogers, Oden, and Jackson. The experiment represented an attempt to move a mainline local church toward a more activist mission orientation in relation to its social and economic context. It explores the thesis that pastoral leadership which aims at engaging church leaders in theological reflection about their identity and context will lead to an experience of revitalization.  The experiment in interpretive guidance failed to achieve significant change in the mission orientation of this church toward its community. The purpose of this research project, therefore, is to provide a thorough analysis of the system of categories engaged in the preparation of a subject approach to indexing the JITC.  These categories include inquiry into the 'theologies of liberation,' 'indexing principles,' 'descriptors,' and 'computer-assisted indexing.' A chronology of both texts and tunes is offered, with a historical narrative index describing the historical and theological movements in hymnody. The project applied grief counseling methods to eight declining rural churches.  The project demonstrates that grief is part of rural churches and grief counseling leads to new identity and renewed vitality.
