Using the perspective of the ministry studies of the United Methodist Church, the author analyzes pertinent data from scripture, church history and ecumenical agreements as well as social factors of time periods when the various forms of the diaconate (deacon, monastic orders, deaconess, diaconal minister) were strong, and concludes that the office of deacon is important as a representative ministry and embodiment of Christ's call to serve. The purpose of this study is to show that a consistent and systematic way to approach bioethical dilemmas has evolved in the last quarter century.  The study approaches the discussion of limiting medical treatment from medical, legal, and theological perspectives. Specifically, bioethical dilemmas involving persons with developmental disabilities residing in a state residential facility in California are explored.  The project portion of the study includes a handbook for use with families in considering options regarding limiting medical treatment. A two-year survey of a newspaper's comics page was made to identify relevant material.  The selected comics are presented under wide-ranging topical headings with commentary and reflection.  This could be considered an illustrated collection of sermon illustrations. Lay care-givers (elders and deacons) attended a two-day workshop in which they were presented with a brief history and explanation of pastoral care and spirituality, and introduced to the concept of 'spiritually centered pastoral care' or spiritual direction by lay care-givers. Children afflicted with leprosy were alienated and had an especially hard time adjusting to society.  These children are physically normal but are social outcasts because of such problems as family background, living environment, educational situation, social restrictions, and psychological conflicts or anxieties.  The purpose of this project is to produce a unique educational program for children of leprosy victims in the Yosu Aeyangwon area in Korea.
