The project involves the recruitment, training and deployment of a small group of senior lay pastoral and sacramental assistants in a suburban Anglican parish.  The author uses phenomenological research methodology, and as participant-observer describes changes in the participants' self-assessed spiritual status, using as data before and after interviews. People associated with Mennonite churches in Winnipeg are the focus of this study. The study works with two hypotheses: first, there is domestic violence among Mennonites, and second, that people in abusive situations turn to the church for help. Project data comes from older adults interacting within separate groups who, differing by age, religious affiliation, health, cultural-ethnicity, gender, and education, met weekly for sixteen weeks sharing 'stories of aging' and responding to questionnaires and studies in aging.  Participants' responses focus on the church's role in empowering older adults to create prophetic, serving, hopeful communities of peers. The research group was a random sampling of eleven American Baptist churches in the San Diego area.  A questionnaire was given to determine the believer's level of participation in, attitude towards, and understanding of the Lord's Supper.  Those in the top twenty percent and bottom twenty percent were given Pittard's Revised Commitment Test. Initiating the project was a survey of a congregation's perception of faith.  Results of the survey reflected the need of Baptists to address the place of experience after the 'born again' event, a lack of discipline, and the influence others have on an individual's spiritual growth.  At the end of the project a survey was taken that showed Southern Baptists can develop an understanding of spirituality as journey. Using original sources, the author shows how a liberal 'vision,' above and beyond the 'modernism' of the times, contributed to an unprecedented level of church growth, individual enthusiasm, and social and political influence.  A significant factor was the large number of women ministers serving in Iowa in positions of power.
