The most success in treating this disease has come through a renewal of one's spirituality. Personal spirituality focuses on one's higher power, the self, relationships, surrender, conversion, trust, and a host of other issues, which are all core parts of the AA program.  This paper has used the alcoholic and the recovery process of AA's twelve steps as a paradigm for growth in spirituality for everyone facing a variety of dis-eases that disrupt modern life.  This process has been correlated with biblical insights and concepts as the foundation of Christian spirituality. The ministry challenge addressed by this thesis is the intentional introduction and cultivation of interventions to develop characteristics which will move an aggregate congregation toward becoming a covenant fellowship, thus becoming more attractive to the seekers as well as more responsive to their needs.  The conclusions reached in this study are that it is possible to create those physical characteristics of a covenant fellowship within a congregation which make a difference in retaining active members. Designated leaders of the church will be more effective if they can be aware of the need for their 'production' to be balanced by the energizing and recreative aspects of play.  Such a need might well begin with the intimacy in their own family relationships.  The disquisition develops the relational theme of play biblically, sociologically, and psychologically. That being the case, the dynamic of worship deserves most careful attention.  Research is conducted through analysis of the Bible and historical writings of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).  This is placed within the framework of the 'five orders of worship' of Campbell and early Disciples.  The author concludes that Disciples are forsaking their historical/theological heritage in public leadership of worship.
