The study used a case history method involving four cases drawn from the author's work as a hospital chaplain and as a pastoral counselor.  The histories were preceded by a theoretical investigation of the condition of depression and of pastoral assessment and treatment concerns. A course of study of the Gospel of Matthew was prepared and taught to members of a local congregation to test the validity of the hypothesis. The hermeneutical process was taken from Paul Ricouer and the theology of stewardship was developed in reaction to Karl Barth's concept of 'true growth' in the community of faith.  A seminar based upon the shared Christian praxis approach was developed.  The seminar was held at the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Calumet, Oklahoma. It consisted of lectures and written activities.  The seminar participants gained a new understanding of stewardship which was used to project avenues of action. The paper describes learnings which indicate that the pastoral counselor, in particular, is able to utilize resources beyond the commonly accepted behavioral models, for the responsible practice of care-giving to those seeking his or her assistance.
