Matthew"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The aim of this project is to examine how evangelical congregations in the Chicago area are carrying out missional discipleship. The main research question is, ‘What are best practices for a missional approach to discipleship for the local church?’ Two additional questions are used to answer the main research question: (1) What are some of the major challenges these local churches encountered in their discipleship efforts? and (2) What lessons can be learned from the experience of these congregations when formulating a missional disciple-making strategy?To explore and answer the research question, a multiple case study methodology is employed. This method examines three evangelical churches in the Chicago area who embody a missional discipleship, using three different types of data collection. These include two focus groups at each church involving semi- structured qualitative interviews with small group leaders and participants, six participant observations of events these churches carried out for people in their communities, and a collection of documentary evidence.The data from this study was organized into findings and concluded with three emphases that can be implemented by churches in their discipleship practices. Matthew","Missionaries--Training of of","Theological seminaries"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Changes in the world create new challenges and opportunities in the world of missions.Globalization has many positive aspects but can lead to increasing anti-West, anti-Christian, and nationalistic attitudes which make it difficult for Western Christians to live and serve as traditional missionaries in many countries.But ease of travel and communication allows people with professional education and skills to work anywhere; this is an opportunity for Christians to live and work and be a dynamic witness to Jesus in urban centers and marketplaces, the ‘Agora,’ even in those same countries.Many Christian professionals, not wanting to serve as traditional, donor-supported missionaries, are taking advantage of these opportunities and are reaching out to mission agencies for assistance.The author investigated, through interviews with agency leaders in Canada, their perspectives regarding professionals’ readiness for cross-cultural, Christian witness in the Agora, and regarding the roles that the Agency, Assembly, and Academy might have in any equipping them for that. Two primary, broad, necessary characteristics of professionals are spiritual maturity and cultural awareness. Two means of developing these are experience and discipleship. Experience is needed in their professional field, cross-cultural interaction, and Christian ministry; discipleship is needed to integrate good theology into one’s life, work and ministry.This project proposes a model for multi-faceted experience and integrated discipleship that moves professionals from self-awareness to Christ-like wholeness, and from cultural awareness to wise missiology. It describes how I changed from an agnostic to a Christian and from a worldly leader to a servant leader. To do so, it combines three documents written during my DMin: my Leadership Narrative, my Philosophy of Christian Leadership, and my Project Report. Each of these tells part of the story of my growth. During my studies, my skills as a marketplace missionary, coaching mentor, business consultant, and leadership instructor developed a great deal, which gave me the confidence and courage I needed to introduce a new paradigm of Christian development to my Korean Canadian community. To achieve this purpose, I studied resilience and began my research project, which sought to answer the question, “Can I design a process that will help Korean leaders develop their resilience?” The Project Report describes how I tried to do so. Six executive leaders at three Korean non-profit organizations in Toronto participated in the project. Case Study Research was my primary methodology, which allowed me to discover each individual participant’s experiences as they went through the resilience training. Both qualitative and quantitative analysis were used to determine the findings, outcomes, and interpretations of this project. To help address these concerns, a leadership retreat was designed and implemented that used Appreciative Inquiry (AI) as a process to help the leadership team develop a clear vision for outreach to the community of Oakville. There were seven leaders who participated, and the outcomes of the retreat were analyzed. The project was aimed at facilitating the development of leadership team vision for the residents living in this community. Using AI processes, the leadership team looked at the vision for the Oakville community, developed a vision statement and committed to designing ways to serve the community needs. It arose from the author’s reflection on her own spiritual journey, from her professional experience as a psychotherapist, and from the observation that psychological barriers often impede spiritual progress. While the psychotherapeutic and spirituality literature often exist in separate silos, and the two professions tend to operate in different domains, the author contends that spiritual formation/direction and psychotherapy in combination are often what is needed to bring about Christlikeness. A psychospiritual model of Christian formation is presented that integrates insights from both domains with particular attention to the rich spiritual traditions of Protestant, Orthodox and Catholic understandings of psychological wholeness and spiritual holiness. To test this integrated model, a field research project was carried out to explore the effect of an integrated, eight-session psychoeducational program with individuals whose spiritual lives were affected by trauma and unforgiveness. The findings of the study suggest that attachment theory and trauma-informed principles may help people move forward in the process of forgiveness and spiritual growth. Colossians","Kingdom of God"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["Through the ministry of the author in Mexico, over two thousand church planters were trained to start over one thousand new churches through the ministry of Resonate Global Mission in partnership with Multiplication Network and several denominations from 2010-2020. When these church planters were developed through the Multiplication Network’s recommended training program, the author desired to know to what extent can the new churches that were planted could be characterized as healthy congregations, kingdom communities, and reproducing organisms?The author decided to study churches that had matured for approximately four years in order to answer this question. Starting with the total population of church planters who were trained and started new churches in 2016-2017, the author chose a random sample of them. He then surveyed and interviewed not only a percentage of those church planters, but also members of their four-year-old churches.Factors were uncovered that often stood in the way of church realizing their full potential as healthy congregations, kingdom communities, and reproducing organisms, such as: antagonistic cultural forces in wider society and in the hearts of believers, navigating expectations with mother churches, getting derailed by daily pressures, and weak commitment. The Word of the holy God is preached and received to make a holy people.  This is a clear Biblical expectation.  Four passages serve to illustrate the consistent focus of scripture on the sanctification of God’s covenant people: Deut. 6, Matt. 5, Eph. 4, and 2 Pet. 1.   The impact of the preaching of John Calvin in Geneva is explored to gauge its impact on the sanctification of the people sitting under the Word.  The influence of the Consistory of Geneva is also examined to determine how they created an expectation of sanctification in that Reformed city.Themes in Walter Marshall’s work, The Gospel Mystery of Sanctification, are summarized to enumerate the various theological strands which are woven together with our sanctification.  Those themes are then used to also discover the degree to which more contemporary sources support a Biblical understanding of the place of sanctification in the Christian life. Lastly such themes are employed to provide a framework in which local churches can increase their emphasis on continual growth in holiness for all of the members of the church.  Ideas for equipping the elders of the church to support this emphasis are detailed. Christian families are losing children to the world at a startling pace. The question of who is responsible for the discipleship of children does not receive enough attention. In practice, churches have looked to serve families by performing this function. This research addresses parents’ roles and responsibilities. Among Christians, there can be an inconsistency between doctrine and practice. Children are abandoning Christianity later in life, and many parents are struggling to fulfill their call to nurture their children in the faith. A multitude of measures are being undertaken by faithful congregations to avert the crisis in families. Genesis 1, Deuteronomy 6, Psalm 78, Ephesians 6, and the Pastoral Epistles lay the expectation that parents will function as the primary disciple makers for children. With the concept of sphere sovereignty and more, Abraham Kuyper offers unique insights into this conversation. After examining the current literature and models for family ministry in churches, the field research explores the ministry models of three particular churches on this issue. Each ministry model brings unique biblical approaches in their endeavor to ensure the faith “once for all delivered to saints” is passed to succeeding generations. Each model also faces challenges unique to the approach they have adopted. This research proposes a new “Every Square Inch” discipleship model. The model enables the family and the church to carry out their respective roles while avoiding abrogating the responsibilities given to other parties. The study begins by demonstrating the debate over the use and interpretation of the BCO within the PCA. It introduces the debate by putting the BCO into the context of the Constitution of the PCA, examining its relation to the Westminster Standards, and how subscription to the Standards affects operating under the BCO. Having put the BCO into the larger context of the Constitution of the PCA, it explores the current debate over polity before examining the resources available to illuminate the BCO. The study moves then to the basic biblical principles of Presbyterian church government. It investigates the headship of Christ as the foundational principle of Church government before working out the implications of his headship in jure divino government and the regulative principle. An examination of Acts 15 shows Christ’s headship in action in the life of the Church, leading to an exploration of the fundamental Scriptural principles that underlie and shape Presbyterian polity. The study then surveys the historical development of the BCO from its beginnings in the Colonial era to the current time to see the significant influences that shaped it. This historical context gives the framework to understand both the larger shape of the Church laid out by the BCO and some of the individual provisions. This project seeks toreclaim union with Christ as the core of Christian identity and to develop a curriculum forteaching this concept. Psychologists consider the formation of personal identity to be the boundarymilestone to adulthood. A stable sense of identity provides a rootedness that allows aperson to weather the changes of his life, social network, and the world.Without a stable identity, the person may well look to the world to make sense of himself,leaving him vulnerable to the loudest voice of the day whether that is media, individuals,or government. Recent changes in society have made forming a stable identity far more difficultthan in previous generations. The mobility of society has removed the identity of place;the breakup of families has removed the identity of family; expanding horizons ofeducation and career have blurred class and occupational identities.The church is not immune to these difficulties. A personal identity is only as strong as the ideas and principles on which it is built. The concept of union with Christ gives believers a framework of identity based on who they are in Christ. In Christ, believers are given meaning and purpose as they join God’s mission of reconciliation. In union with Christ, the image of God damaged by sinis restored. This restores the believer to what he was created to be. This restorationprovides an identity which does not diminish individuality but instead allows believers tocelebrate their different giftedness within the framework of common spiritual union. Inrelationship with the Creator and grounded in truth, the believer is less susceptible to themanipulations and falsehoods of culture.
