The goal of Lutheran preaching is defined as letting hearers encounter Christ so that they are strengthened for faith and discipleship.  Four pastors took part in one-day preaching workshop in which the importance of the preacher's self-image was introduced and explained.  Each pastor agreed to preach a sermon series in which self-image was at the forefront of his mind. The congregation was separated into two groups for a period of eight weeks.  One group experienced video-assisted sermons and the other did not.  Each group was tested for retention of the sermon message. Results from the testing were further divided into five generations present in the church.  Statistically it could not be said that greater retention was gained by video-assistance. This project asserts that PDT use in a sermon greatly enhances listener ability to retain biblical truth.  Six sermons in three pairs were delivered.  Three sermons used PDT and three did not.  Listeners were queried six weeks after each sermon by questionnaire to determine any difference in their ability to recall the sermon based upon the use of a PDT. The author examines four 'turning points' (the First and Second Great Awakenings, the Businessmen's Revival of 1857-58 and mid-twentieth century evangelism) in American religious history and discusses the relationship between spiritual revival and cultural engagement during periods of awakening. Ushers at the Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Detroit, Michigan were selected to participate in a twelve-week treatment consisting of activities comprised of self-directed learning, critical reflection, and transformative learning. The Levitical priesthood and their temple ministry were used to develop the theological model. The results were a deepened spiritual commitment, an expanded understanding of the biblical and theological foundation for ushering, and an increased desire to participate in ushering as ministry. The program is based on the cognitive/behavioral tradition providing insight and skills needed to change thinking and behavior. This approach not only enables married couples to learn effective ways of developing a more stable and satisfying relationship, but also provides a structure in which the learned skills can be put into practice. 12 couples participated in this 8-week program. They completed the following 7 components: 1) attendance and participation in the Prevention and Relationship Enhancement Program Approach seminar; 2) reading 2 marriage enrichment books; 3) Bible-based devotional reading and prayer twice weekly; 4) a date night every other week; 5) weekly meetings; 6) a weekend retreat; and 7) attendance and participation in a 'Celebration of Commitment' ceremony. The ENRICH Marital Inventory was given as a pre- and post-test. It was used to measure the effectiveness of the program along with verbal and written reporting by the couples. Using examples of conflict this theory is applied to parish life, addressing certain phenomena in the contemporary church such as resistance to change and group thinking, particularly as it is manifested in conflict between pastors and parishioners.  The theory is also used interactively with family systems theory and applied to aspects of ministry within the larger church.
