Southside was an eleven year old, small rural church in western Tennessee, that had experienced fifty-eight deaths. Unprocessed grief bent the congregation in the direction of becoming a sanctuary church and a survivor church.  Death hit this church hard and grief overload was experienced. The mutual critical dialogue among the three sources resulted in recommendations for a renewed ministry to parishioners in behalf of spirituality. Two basic themes out of which the recommendations were generated were: 1) the image of the Church as a community of disciples, and 2) small faith communities. How can a church press toward a mark if they are not looking in a forward direction?  How can they press toward a mark if the mark is not identified?  These concerns are compounded when a high percentage of the membership will be gone every two or three years.  Imagine how difficult it is to make long-range plans in a short-term community.  The goal of this project is to create a process whereby church members can envision and perform long-range ministry goals.  The Shell Point Baptist Church in Beaufort, South Carolina, is in a military town.  Surrounding the church are the Parris Island Recruit Depot, the Marine Corps Air Station, and the Naval Hospital. Military personnel are temporary and are constantly transferring or deploying for lengthy time.  This professional project is an attempt to make strategic long-range plans even though many of the church members are short-term residents. Faith mentoring is understood as accompaniment that assists in vocational, relational and spiritual growth. Following Sandra Matthei's model for faith mentoring, three dimension of faith mentoring are discussed (incarnational, contextual, relational) and four roles explored (guide, guarantor, model, mediator).  The method of addressing each correspondent was informed by social analysis concerning Filipino cultural values and Charles Taylor's three stage metanoia model. The proposed strengths are that the relationship provides a tangible way of expressing faith, that it provides an avenue of cooperation and heightened ecumenism, and that it provides a way to overcome racial barriers. The proposed weaknesses are that the relationship may be hindered by a church's sense of territoriality, by a church's financial constraints, and by the immensity of the housing problem. The study reviews critical foundations, both biblical and theological, that undergird the ministry of Habitat for Humanity as it partners with local churches. The project will include preaching an eleven-week series of sermons on Sunday mornings that focus on five biblical functions and four specific needs of the church.  The functions and needs include evangelism, discipleship, fellowship, ministry, worship, commitment, organization, vision, and prayer.  In addition, a series of lessons will be taught on Wednesday nights that focus on the same functions and needs. However, the Wednesday lessons will differ from the Sunday sermons by highlighting different aspects.  A better understanding of the functions and needs should result in developing effective ministries. The aim of the series is to present the need for a shift in ministry focus that leads the church to revitalization and both spiritual and numerical growth.  New ministry options will be explored and examined by a Task Force. While this view is strongly held by the author, it is of little value if it cannot be appreciated by lay people.  Therefore, the author designed a five session adult study course focusing on the above thesis which was offered in an experimental way in the local church as a means of affirming or denying its efficacy as a faith developing entity. The purpose of this project was the development of a procedural manual, which will enable pastors in the North American Baptist Conference (NABC) to gain insight into how a good ministry fit can be found. The research methodology entailed a series of interviews. The sample interviewed represented 12.8 percent of the overall number of pastors in the conference who had recently gone through pastoral transition. The project establishes eight phases of the transition process. The issues of each phase are detailed. The final section of the project is 'A Pastoral Transition Manual.'
