This has resulted in resource-rich suburban churches having little redemptive influence on their urban neighbors. This report describes the efforts of one suburban church to begin urban ministries in an attempt to harness its resources on behalf of the city. It details the launch of three urban ministry teams with a goal ultimately to plant an urban church. Spiritual health is defined through biblical research and indexed by five factors (sound doctrine, effective ministry, functional body life, spiritual sensitivity, and perseverance) with associated vital signs. Contemporary literature on spiritual health and its measurement are analyzed. A survey based on the five vital signs is designed and field-tested in local churches. The purpose of the surveys was to determine what the working pastors were thinking. The hypothesis was that not much is being done to assist the working pastors in dealing with their frustrations. The Rite envisions, during the Period of the Catechumenate, a kind of apprenticeship for catechumens and candidates, focusing on instruction, prayer, community and formation in apostolic activity. This thesis project focuses on three parishes with three very different approaches to the Period of the Catechumenate. The descriptions of the spiritual life in scripture provide a measuring stick for spiritual growth assessment. This research included a survey tool which allowed college alumni to rate their spiritual progress in thirty key areas. This tool also solicited feedback on the effectiveness of college programs and personnel towards the students' perceived spiritual formation. On average, the alumni reported spiritual growth in twenty-nine areas. Participants responded spiritually in four representative types: confirmation, affirmation with change, radical newness, and radical disorder. Theological reflection increased emotional resolution and spiritual growth in bereavement. Those engaging the pain and confusion of spiritual transformation asserted new meaning, perspective, and strength as a result of grief. This qualitative case study demonstrated thematic dconsistency in the way young adult women bereaved during college years engage or do not engage questions of God's character, justice and their own identities during bereavement. Popular church growth plans often are not applicable or conducive to such a setting and often have cataclysmic results for the church and pastor. This plan is adapted and curtailed to meet the needs of the subculture of the church while being faithful to its evangelical heritage. The step-by-step plan is given with the results, positive and negative. The contextual associates, thus, designed a four week project to reached unchurched children and their parents.
