Alternatively, the biblical concept of vocation teaches that people serve as God’s agents to lovingly sustain the world through their roles (vocations) in life—in family, at work, in the community and church. Teens need of what the teaching of vocation offers. A high calling is offered through the biblical concept of vocation. However, there are few, if any, materials or curricula available to teach the concept of vocation for today’s high school audience. The concern over a lack of materials or curricula on vocation prompted the focus of this project. If materials were created for a high school audience, and then taught, would the topic be seen as relevant and resonate with the audience? Further, would this material also be comprehended and understood? The challenge of this project was to create a curriculum that would be designed in such a way that the concept would be remembered and applied. Long-standing rivalries can come to the forefront and create dissension and strife that threaten to tear apart God's people. Satan uses human sin to stir up disorder within the Christian congregation. God's word, however, is an ordering word that overcomes the work of Satan to reestablish good order.\r\nThis project addresses an instance of congregational conflict that occurred as the result of the decline and eventual closure of the school that was operated by St. Paul Lutheran Church in Milford Center, Ohio. The congregation was divided between those who felt that the school was too great a financial burden for the congregation to continue to carry and those who believed that the school was too vital a piece of the spiritual development for the congregation's children to allow it to close. The period in question was one of great strain to the congregation that resulted in division and disagreement and disorder.\r\nThe doctrine of the three estates affirms that God has designed a specific order into his creation through his institution of the church, the family, and the civil government. Within these estates, God has established a holy order with offices that have been given a specific domain in which they are to exercise authority as a trust and stations that are given to be subordinate to those offices. These offices are arranged within the spheres of the three estates, namely the church, the household, and the civil government. Through authority, God protects the individual members of a community and ensures their protection and provision. God calls on each member of the community to willingly place themselves under the care of their authorities. Conflict and disorder arise when authorities misuse or abuse their office or when members of a community refuse to practice subordination.\r\nThe intent of this study was to teach the scripture passages and related doctrine to the members of St. Paul Lutheran Church during its period of disorder. Special attention would be given to teach the spiritual discipline of subordination together with the right use of authority. Subordination is the willing surrender of oneself such that the individual takes the role of a servant within a community. Likewise, authority is to be used in service to the community and in subordination to Christ. The assumption of the study is that God's word is an ordering word and through the teaching and the preaching of that word order would be restored. A teaching plan was developed that sought to make the doctrines concrete using visual aids and metaphors. Following the teaching, a survey was conducted to determine the effectiveness of that teaching. This continuity was achieved by combining confirmation instruction with Sunday school, combining pre-confirmation and post-confirmation classes, and shifting evaluation methods for confirmation readiness to promote real achievement of meaningful goals rather than jumping through hoops. Parents also have a duty to teach the faith to their children. When congregations have Christian day schools there are also teachers who have the opportunity to teach the faith to their students. While there is one faith, and we have received a pattern of sound words, unfortunately, even in the church, the teaching of pastors, parents, and teachers is not always unified, to the detriment of those who hear such dissonant voices. In order to synthesize the teaching voices in the congregation, home, and school, a method of catechesis was developed by the researcher to be used by the pastors, parents, and teachers in his ministry context. God has always used poetry set to music to teach and proclaim His Word to His people. Throughout the Old Testament and New Testament, we see evidence of psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs that contain the Word of God to help people read, mark, learn, and inwardly digest the truth of our Lord’s salvific plan. The first Christians continued to incorporate hymns and songs in their worship and daily life. Martin Luther and the reformers of the sixteenth century used hymnody as a vehicle to proclaim Christ and catechize the people to see that we are saved by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ Jesus alone. Using a variety of methods set forth herein, this project set out to help people see true nature of Lutheran hymnody and how it can be used as a resource for daily Oratio, Meditatio, and Tentatio. The thesis examined was: “Offering excellent continuing education opportunities for pastors positively influences pastoral health; Pastoral health positively influences congregational health.” This study developed a strong theological foundation for pastoral continuing education, then solicited input from four distinct groups in a Delphi study triangulated by responses from a control group. While Sunday, the day of resurrection, has always been the primary focus and the most ideal day for the church to gather around the Word and Sacraments, this central activity of the church is not limited to that singular day. As the Large Catechism makes clear “Truly, we Christians ought to make every day such a holy day and devote ourselves only to holy things, that is, to occupy ourselves daily with God’s Word and carry it in our hearts and upon our lips.” (LC I 89)  Unlike our Reformed neighbors Lutherans have not relegated the worship of the church to Sunday only, but traditionally and in keeping with the church catholic have frequently offered the Divine Service and other services of the church during the week. For some this has been done for practical reasons, such as work schedules, or availability. For others, it is a matter of faith. The ongoing and troubling reality of sin in our lives necessitates the need for another opportunity to receive and hear the Gospel. It is through Word and Sacrament that we Christians are made, sustained and comforted over time. Thus, it holds that the church should not be stingy with the gifts of our Lord Christ. Instead it is the contention of this project that the mid-week Divine Service aids in the carrying out of the mission of the church in a fuller and more effective way by helping to form a resilient and faithful Lutheran parish church.\r\nThis Doctor of Ministry project will examine the history and purpose of the mid-week Divine Service, especially within those churches that are descendants of the “Muhlenberg tradition”  and subsequently the General Council. This is the tradition from which the author hails as well as the tradition of the ministry setting for this project. The primary objective of this project is to examine how and why mid-week Divine Services were implemented at Salem Evangelical Lutheran Church, Ephrata PA. The key question is whether the congregation understands the purpose of the parochial school in the same way that those who started the school understood their purpose in doing so. Institutions, including parochial schools, have a tendency to take their raison d'être for granted and begin to exist for the sake of perpetuating themselves as institutions. To re-dedicate to parochial school ministry in a worthwhile way that serves the true mission for which it was founded, a congregation must evaluate its own assumptions about, goals for, and perceptions of the school ministry. This project provides a template for honestly evaluating the pros and cons of continuing to operate a parochial school in difficult circumstances and honestly comparing the stated, original purposes for the school with the actual purposes for the school in the minds of the congregation members.
