The author researched motivational principles in psychology, education, the Bible, and the writings of Ellen G. White.  He taught these principles in a six-hour seminar, had participants deliver sermons using seminar principles, and evaluated the effectiveness of the principles.  Research suggested that addressing personal needs enhances motivation.  Three principal factors affect intrinsic motivation: self-esteem, participation, and most importantly the gospel. Principles of adult learning, learning style theory, and the 4MAT system of learning potentially enhance motivation. College chaplains seek to understand these students and their faith and help students nourish their faith.  College chaplains often assume, and perhaps rightfully so, that students want to participate in Bible studies, worship and reflection groups, and service projects.  Yet, sometimes both students and chaplains are unsure of what faith is and how it can be nourished.  This project seeks to help college chaplains serving small, private, liberal arts, church-related colleges in answering these questions.  Chapter 1, 'Faith and Faith Development,' offers a definition of faith, discusses faith development and nourishment.  Chapter 2, 'The Action/Reflection Group,' reports on a small group of students who gathered to discuss faith. Chapter 3, 'A Chaplain's Response,' interprets the findings of this group and relates them to the faith development model used in Chapter 1. The author designed and implemented an eight-week parent training curriculum (Growing up Godly: a developmental approach to parenting) for a group at First Church of Christ, Barberton, Ohio.  Participants developed and committed to a personal parenting plan.  Participants completed surveys before instruction began, immediately following the training period, and two and one half months later. Each of the six sessions included prayer, worship, teaching, discussions, devotional material, and weekly assignments.  The nineteen participants (five men and fourteen women) ranged in age from the mid-forties to the mid-eighties.  Class members showed improvement in handling their own feelings about suffering, in their understanding of the importance of the Body of Christ ministering to each other's emotional and spiritual needs, and in skills in responding to their own and others' suffering. The research question is: What is the effect of the practice of specific spiritual disciplines upon leadership roles by laity within a local church setting?  A secondary question is: Does the regular practice of these spiritual disciplines promote change in leadership styles? It looks at the relationship imaginative preaching has with orality, narrative, and incarnation. The question is 'can I create (an environment) in preaching similar to what I create in a pastoral care event?' Can I create what might traditionally be understood as sanctuary for sermon listeners so they can hear with greater clarity difficult topics? With this in mind, I have created a preaching model that uses a line graph to illustrate how I create such a space in the preaching event. The graph follows the contours of common etiquette in conversation. Can a sermon successfully follow that model of conversation similar to a line graph that looks like the contour of a bowl to create this sacred environment? If the sermon starts out in conversational style at first (the edge of the bowl), then dives into the depths of difficult topics (into the basin of the bowl), then returns to lighter conversational style (out to the outer rim of the bowl) will this create an environment that is safe enough for sermon listeners to hear the topic with greater clarity? This project also explores language, emotion, and the exercises of embracing the congregation with the love of God, which is understood from a process theological understanding of God as energy. Can this energy/love of God be controlled while using yoga and or Christian prayer as a modality that can affect the congregation and their sense of safety? It is based on the premise that there is a great deal of pain in the world both in individuals and in society. Our failure to acknowledge our pain and offer it to God in worship is detrimental to the building of community in the church and to our relationship with God. Conversely, when we preach, pray and sing laments in keeping with biblical tradition, individuals may find healing and the community may grow in compassion. Reclaiming lament is important to preaching as an antidote to the denial of pain seen in some forms of worship. Old Testament scholars, particularly Walter Brueggemann, worship-theologians and pastoral care scholars affirm the positive aspects of the lament tradition. My method was to demonstrate lament in preaching, prayers and music. The thesis is informed by The New Homiletic and makes use of an aspect of family systems theory called leadership through self-differentiation and emotional connection to explain the transformation of the author as a preacher and a leader.
