Many small church pastors are frustrated as they witness the decline of the small church. However, many of these pastors continue using preaching models that seem insufficient to address the issues in the small church, primarily the issue of conflict resistance. This thesis proposes that an alternative preaching model is needed in the small church, particularly one with conflict and complexity built into the preaching model, for the purpose of challenging the small church to embrace conflict so that it might be transformed. This is important to the field of homiletics because it seeks to demonstrate a narrative conflictual model of preaching in an institution that regularly resists conflict. The thesis is supported by theory primarily provided by Lyle Schaller and Eugene Lowry. It begins by outlining the theological basis for the study. The project then contrasts western and non-western worldviews, detailing some of the assumptions underlying each one, and comparing western worldview constructs with the mysticism of Java. Following an extended case study there are nineteen interactive reflective studies on specific themes related to spiritual conflicts. Missionaries and missionary candidates evaluated the interactive studies. It seeks to answer the question: 'Looking at the hostage crisis, what lessons are there to be learned by the mission in managing such a crisis?' The project makes use of relevant literature, materials related to the crisis, and interviews with involved personnel to answer this question. The case study uses questionnaires to study the involvement of new Southern Baptist congregations, nine area Southern Baptist associations, the FNorth American Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention, and the Billy Graham Association. The church planting project was successful with forty-nine of the fifty-one churches planted surviving. Though each sponsoring church handled their relationship with their new church plant differently, each gave financially to support the new church. This project is a modified content analysis of literature used by the Southern Baptist Convention. Questions about the literature were asked in order to gauge the strengths, weaknesses and common themes. The answers provided data that was beneficial in determining how the denomination trains churches in sponsoring new work. As a result seventeen principles were identified.
