The research employed a descriptive/historical research design to obtain self-reported observations to open-end variable in a 'command' approved 'Hymnal Revision Questionnaire.' The literature review seeks to demonstrate the thesis theoretically.  In practice, the thesis is demonstrated quantitatively and qualitatively by the use of a questionnaire and interviews with patients. The following areas were examined: acceptance of the chaplain's ministry, the chaplain's supportive ministry, the chaplain's ministry to help the patient cope, and the chaplain's ministry to the patient's private concerns.  The findings demonstrate that there is a high level of satisfaction with each aspect of pastoral care. This practice of affiliating with more than one convention raises questions as to the theological and practical problems it may  engender for black Baptists. This project examined dual alignment though the lens of ordination, contrasting the standards of American Baptists with those of National Baptists, USA Inc. A cross-disciplinary model of hope was constructed using the writings of philosophers Bloch and Marcel, theologian Moltmann and psychologist Erikson. Secondly, using the Snyder Hope Scale, the Cooper-Smith Self Esteem Sale and Paloutzian and Ellison's Spiritual Well-Being Scale, the study tested the model by investigating the relationship amongst hope, self esteem and spiritual well-being in Australian students.  Subjects were 414 students from undergraduate programs offered by Australian Catholic University.  The study found that students had a high degree of hope, expressing this in goal-related thoughts and in action for social justice. The project builds on a qualitative analysis of theological and clinical research on priestly identity, and the etiology and treatment of the disease of alcoholism.  Through the development and use of a clinical questionnaire seventeen clinicians from a major treatment center give recommendations for treatment and the implications for the wider diocesan community.  Involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous is stressed as part of this holistic response. Both theological and psychological perspectives are brought to bear upon one complex life experience of cutting. Special attention is given to the subject of embodiment and to various schools of psychology, broadly construed, that understand physical well-being and psychological well-being as integrally related.  These perspectives are brought into dialogue as they elucidate the story that unfolded in an interview with one former client who has cut. A review of the literature on (1) Generation X and their spiritual and religious needs (2) pastoral ministry to this population, and (3) ministry in military was completed.  Qualitative data on the needs of this population was gathered in discussion groups of Generation X personnel in the Air Force. Historically, classroom teaching has concentrated on an outline of essential Christian doctrines while preaching has relied primarily on the telling of the Good News of Jesus.  The early church did the exact opposite among those whom they taught and preached. The project includes a literature review, descriptors of the Appalachian and postmodern mindsets arising from that review, a survey based on those descriptors, survey results and conclusions.  The survey was distributed in a two-church United Methodist Charge in central Pennsylvania.
