Through a mixed-methods approach combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, the researcher implemented a six-week emotional intelligence program for fifteen African American high school students. The intervention consisted of two community excursions (a toy distribution service project and a bowling event) and four weekly coaching sessions focused on self-awareness, empathy, assertiveness, and heart-based decision-making.\r\n\r\nThe research was grounded in both theological and theoretical frameworks that emphasized the heart as the center of meaningful behavioral change, aligning with emotional intelligence principles. Data collection included pre- and post-intervention surveys, interviews, participant journaling, direct observation, and focus groups. Results demonstrated significant improvements in participants' decision-making approaches, with measurable growth in analytical thinking, reduced reliance on external validation, and increased decision confidence. Behavioral observations revealed enhanced social skills, empathy, and leadership emergence.\r\n\r\nThe findings suggest that developing emotional intelligence provides youth with effective tools to process trauma and make better decisions. This improvement was particularly evident in the dramatic increase in participant engagement between the first and second excursions. This project researches and addresses the problem that less than five percent of churches in the United States have a lay disciple making culture. The hypothesis is that a healthy church will have a minimum of thirty percent of its laity actively involved in life-on-life relational disciple making that creates a tipping point in the culture of the church. Key to this study is the idea that Jesus Christ and his method should take priority. For this reason, the title is Christ´s mission through the local church versus the church´s mission about Christ. The research investigates the biblical and theological background to missional disciple making. Literature was investigated regarding missional ecclesiology, sociological findings in connection with disciple making environments, and disciple making training methods. Three case studies of missional disciple making churches were researched. The research investigated questions of training, obstacles, structure, systems, culture, pastoral priorities and vision for lay missional disciple making in the local church. \r\n\r\nThe findings suggest that the local church can achieve the vital work of winning, building, equipping, multiplying and empowering laity to do the Great Commission. To achieve this ministry there must be clear definitions, processes, tracking, metrics, and simple reproducible methods. Significant shifts must take place in many churches to engage, train, and empower laity. When a disciple making culture is achieved there is an unlocking of ministry potential through the local church. The praxis of the study is to apply the findings to a multiethnic church planting residency in the city of St. Louis. By 2025, St. Louis plans to be the fastest growing foreign-born city in America. The God of scripture is a missionary God who created all people in his image to walk with him and learn to practice his gentle and humble heart, by faith alone, in Christ alone, so all families will be fully known through grace alone. The church in America in the last twenty-five years has experienced the largest religious shift in history toward pluralism. This rapid social change has led to isolation, spiritual pride, and loneliness. Furthermore, as the global Christian epicenter moves to the Global South, God is sending migrant ministry leaders to the American church as multiethnic church planters. This study walks with sojourners to listen, learn, love, lament, and establish migrant ministry leaders for a diaspora movement of multiethnic church planters in St. Louis. The Bible speaks to immigration from the heart of God. The three main areas of literature review for the study are: diaspora mission, multiethnic church planting, and developing culturally intelligent leaders. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eleven migrant ministry leaders from various denominations in St. Louis, representing six continents. The interviews gathered data using four research questions to identify the challenges that migrant ministry leaders face as sojourners, how the four movements of God’s story of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration are lived in their ministry, the role of cultural intelligence in shaping the mature character of Christ, and how networks flourish in the immigrant communities of their city. The literature review focused on three key areas: the challenges multiethnic church planters face in rapid social change in America, the divine design of multiethnic motivations to practice the heart of Christ to love the sojourner, and the glory and affliction of those who network diaspora communities for the common good of the city. This study found three necessary components to multiethnic church planting in diaspora communities: the brokenness and beauty of diaspora mission, the glory and affliction of practicing the heart of Christ in multiethnic church planting, and the beautiful community of a diaspora network for the common good of the city. Related to these three components, this study also found that multiethnic ministry leaders face five major challenges: trust, trauma, isolation, conflict, and identity in cross cultural complexity. The Harvard study of five domains of Human Flourishing are also explored as a resource for building networked communities. The praxis of the study is to implement a residency training for migrant ministry leaders to seek the common good of the city of St. Louis by living the gospel to transform the idolatry of the city. Migrant ministry leaders multiplying whole life disciple making in beautiful community are redeeming the idols of parochial, prideful, and prejudicial attitudes. Migrant leaders are modeling humility in suffering for the American church to see the glory of the beatitudes lived as a city of ambassadors from all families of the earth. It is written because in a time where the Church in the West is in decline, it seems most necessary to deepen the understanding with regards to theological challenges that come with the missiological context of the secular West. The methodology is based upon descriptive research, which was guided by a main research question. The answering of the main question was done through answering four subquestions, and those four answers were key to most of the main content in the thesis. The first chapter starts with an introduction that describes the methodology, which is followed by a review of literature. Chapter two is about the characterization of a reformational theology of ministry, which is presented with the three principles of Gospel, Culture, and Movement. Chapter three then deals with the characterization of the secular West, in which it is first about the distinctiveness of the West and then about the concepts of postmodernity and post-Christian as essential insights into secularism. After that comes chapter four that has the focus on the characterization of the missional Church, which is described though an exploration of the missiological foundational elements of discipleship and faithful presence. The fifth chapter starts with summarizing the findings, followed by describing the characterization of the missional Church in the secular West, which is done by elaboration on six basic elements. These six basic elements are: Christian high theory, post-Christendom evangelistic dynamic, category defying social vision, counter-catechesis for a digital age, faithful presence in public spheres, and grace to the point. This fifth chapter ends with the conclusion that he secular West needs a healthy missional Church, which implies a reformational theology of ministry that is fruitful through proper incorporation of the three principles of Gospel, Culture, and Movement. And part of that conclusion is also that in order for the (missional) Church to be healthy it needs to embrace discipleship and faithful presence at the core of its (missiological) teaching. It is a conclusion that can also be understood with the two foundational commissions in the Bible: Genesis 1:26 and Matthew 28:18-20. WML face significant challenges in discipling the next generation of women, including evolving views on sex, gender roles, and biblical womanhood. This study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eleven WML from various Reformed denominations with a minimum of five years of experience. The interviews focus on gaining data with four research questions: 1. What models do WML in the church currently use to teach women about biblical womanhood? 2. What challenges do WML encounter when they teach biblical womanhood to younger women? 3. What changes to their teaching on biblical womanhood have WML already undertaken to disciple the next generation of women? 4. What resources for teaching biblical womanhood do WML in the church say they will need to disciple women in the future? The literature review presents three areas key to understanding biblical womanhood: a concise biblical theology of womanhood, Biblical WomanhoodTM resources, and critiques of these resources. This study concludes that the teaching of biblical womanhood should include elements of creation design, biblical theology, gender eschatology, and a theology of the female body. Special attention should be given to the topics of identity, feminism, and transgenderism. Furthermore, WML expressed the necessity of providing an integrated, whole-person model of discipleship to younger women. Related to these three components, this study finds that WML face three major challenges when they teach biblical womanhood: difficulties in connecting with younger women, negative connotations of biblical womanhood, and experiential objections to it. Corinthians I","Spiritual formation","Case studies"],"abstract_tesim":["        The purpose of this study was to understand how young adults experienced spiritual formation at home that helped them to uphold a biblical sexual ethics while studying at residential universities. Away from their families and centers of spiritual formation, young adults face tremendous ethical pressures from their peers and often find themselves without the necessary tools to navigate those challenges. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight young adults who not only navigated those challenges, but also encouraged their peers toward a more biblical worldview resulting in ethical behavioral change. The interview analysis concluded that their experience of spiritual formation in their teenage years was a significant component for them upholding biblical sexual ethics in college and remaining in church later. The literature review focused on three key areas to understand the biblical sexual ethic and its subsequent development in adolescents: Modern commentary and exegesis of 1 Corinthians 6:12-20, The Greco-Roman context and ancient sexual ethic, and systems theory and its implications for parenting. This study found that adolescents described social pressure in four areas: humor, experimentation, overt challenge, and transactional behavior. Because of these challenges this study concluded that there are three necessary components to sustain healthy spiritual formation in adolescents for them to uphold biblical ethics: courageous clarity, heart-centered intentionality, and calm adaptability. Lamentations","Church work with veterans","Veterans--Religious life","Case studies"],"abstract_tesim":["        The purpose of this study is to explore how Lamentations 3 provides a connection between the ministry of the Word and pastoral care for veterans who have experienced various forms of spiritual distress during and after warfare. This research addresses a gap between the care clinicians and ministers offer to veterans and the religious need that some combat veterans have. Given the presence of combat veterans within the church, how do ministers of the Word fill this gap with biblically-based pastoral care? Addressing this question utilized a qualitative design with semi-structured interviews and seven Christian veterans from the Vietnam War, the Gulf War and the War on Terrorism. Research questions guiding the interviews were (1) How did Christian veterans experience God during combat? (2) How did combat shape the faith of Christian veterans upon their return home? (3) How have pastors helped Christian veterans engage God? Three areas of literature were explored: spiritual and moral injury, the challenges of providing pastoral care within this context and a survey of Lamentations 3. Findings revealed that the care which ministers of the Word provided to Christian combat veterans was individualized and well received. However, the religious care specific to the effects of combat was primarily provided by combat veterans to one another resulting in three primary findings. First, the binary gap between the church and the clinic was expanded to include veteran organizations creating a triangular network of care. Second, feelings of spiritual distress were surpassed by the presence and protection of God during and after combat. Third, the ministry of these combat veterans to other veterans resembled the spiritual progression of the speaker in Lamentations 3 and the willingness to explore the need for confession and forgiveness with other combat veterans in ways that therapists or ministers typically cannot. The significance of these findings reveals a connection between the role of the speaker in Lamentations 3 and combat veterans who have suffered spiritual distress and yet experienced God’s hope. These veterans are the ones who engage their community of veterans as shepherds and invite them to engage God through confession.
