We focused on the question of how can a congregation embody stewardship as a foundation of mission, participating in the local community in service of God? We reflected upon stewardship as embodied worship and faith in action. Beyond the Offering Plate served as an outline for a sermon series, to help broaden our definition of stewardship and discover a deeper understanding of the meaning of “steward”. Christian parents preach to their children, with or without formation. However, the difference lies between have and have-not faith, formed and not formed. This thesis project is to design a Christian parent formation program based on community, communion, and commission (the 3C). It encourages partnership between Christian parents and between ordained ministers and Christian parents. The goal is to enable Christian parents to be effective Gospel preachers in their domestic Church, a term coined by St. Augustine Hippo in the 4th century and affirmed by the Second Vatican Council.  \r\n\r\nThe first chapter outlines the thesis project’s genesis, ministerial context, \r\nproblem, purpose, hypothesis, assumptions, and limitations. Chapter 2 explores the interdisciplinary foundation. The extensive sociological studies of the 2005 Vern L. Bengtson report and the 2021 Christian Smith report anchored parents’ significant role in intergenerational faith transmission. Chinese culture and immigrant study provide further context for the foundation. Chapter 3 investigates the theological framework based on viewing the Christian family as a domestic Church, a fruit of the Second Vatican Council. This chapter further explores the relationship between the Church and the domestic Church and the practices of the domestic Church. Chapter 4 establishes the thesis project’s homiletic foundation. This chapter discusses Christian parents as preachers in the domestic Church and their preaching as dialogue, witnesses, and storytelling. \r\n\r\n\tTen mothers and six fathers participated in the 3C Parent Preacher Formation Program from January 16 to April 4, 2024. Chapter 5 presents this pilot project in detail. Chapter 6 discusses the result of the pilot project, including qualitative and quantitative data, and how the result supports the hypothesis laid out in Chapter 1. These force multipliers for the congregation, by training grace the pulpit with their frequent presence in my absence as pastor. \r\nThe members of Transformation United Methodist Church in Augusta, Georgia, are like ordinary Black folks who face racism pervasively in matters that pertain to banking, real estate, employment, housing, public education, and community development. I have identified a specific problem within this cultural context: our congregation’s lay servants are not preaching racial justice. Instead, they preach about salvation, spiritual well-being, and relevant topics other than racism. They lack the education and training in biblical prophetic consciousness, homiletic principles for preaching racial justice, and the opportunity to practice racial justice preaching with their peer lay servants to prepare for preaching to a congregation. Thus, this racial justice preaching intervention aims to teach and empower these men and women to proclaim, “Thus says the LORD…” and decry racism in all its facets as the eight-century prophets decried the issues of their times.\r\nChapter 1 outlines the project’s ministerial context, problem, purpose, hypothesis, assumptions, and definition of terms. Chapter 2 explores the Biblical framework of the project based on six texts from the eighth-century prophets and the priestly prayer of Jesus in John’s Gospel to aid preachers and lay preachers in addressing racism. Chapter 3 explores the non-theological interdisciplinary study that informs my hypothesis, showing the long and arduous work of the United Methodist Church combating the plague of racism within its ranks and in society. Chapter 4 provides the homiletic framework of the project by investigating the works of Black homileticians James Henry Harris, Otis Moss III, and Frank Thomas and pointing to other homiletic voices to identify preaching strategies for Methodist lay servants preaching against oppression and injustice. Chapter 5 describes the ministerial intervention at the heart of this thesis—the training of Transformation United Methodist lay servants for racial justice preaching in a prophetic tradition. Over six weeks during November and December 2024, six lay servants (five Black and one white; five female and one male) participated in the rigorous training. Chapter 6 accounts for the researcher’s data analysis, findings, and evaluation and discusses the project’s impact on these newly minted racial justice preachers. Despite affirming youth leadership, leaders have more often commodified children, teens, or young adult ministries rather than developing age-appropriate resources to support Gen Z and Alpha’s interest in spirituality. Age-segregation in U.S. Christian ministry contexts has limited teen’s participation in intergenerational conversations about encountering God, navigating cultural pluralism, and Christian spiritual formation. An over-emphasis on performance and hurry within U.S. evangelical and charismatic ministries has limited teens’ discernment, experiential understanding of God’s character, and ability to build healthy rhythms for life and ministry. Without sufficient modeling, support, and protection, teens have lacked opportunities to experience spirituality, form identities based on their experiences, and steward their unique gifts within community. Synthesizing the strengths of Spiritual Direction and Prophetic ministry may best equip teens to enter into the “search-encounter-transformation” process that has come to characterize contemporary Renewalist spirituality.\r\n\r\nUltimately, Latino/a/x approaches to community may inform more grounded spiritual practices in renewalist youth ministry contexts like Mosaic Church in Seattle, Washington. During a time of increasing U.S. social transformation and latinization, U.S. Latino/a/x communities’ approaches to belonging and social difference (mestizaje), shared testimony (testimonios), family (familismo), solidarity (solidaridad), life in community (en convivencia), and encountering God in everyday life (lo cotidiano) may support U.S. youth ministries to navigate change. Specifically, Latino/a/x Pentecostal patterns of utilizing testimony as a conduit for shared spiritual direction may influence renewalist ministry contexts like Mosaic Youth Ministry to develop a deeper sense of shared identity. Ultimately, my act of ministry project explored whether using Harvard Project Zero thinking routines in small group discussion could support a focus group of Mosaic teens to engage with elders’ testimonies latinamente. \r\n\r\nFor my act of ministry, I interviewed 4 Mosaic Church adults (18+) about an experience they had with God, Jesus, or the Holy Spirit. From the interviews, I rewrote 3 case studies to share with Mosaic teens. Next, I designed a pre-test and post-test to measure teens’ vocabulary and background knowledge. I designed discussion questions based on Bloom’s taxonomy, teen’s lexile levels, Harvard Project Zero’s Connect, Extend, Challenge, Creative Questions, and Think, Puzzle, Explore thinking routines. I met with 6 middle and high school students (12-18) who had differing amounts of experience with spiritual encounter to discuss these encounter narratives over 5 weeks in Fall 2023. At the end, teens reflected on what they had received from the project and their remaining questions.\r\n\r\nThe results of this research demonstrate that responding to case studies within small group contexts can be an effective way to support teen’s vocabulary development about spirituality. Responding to case studies may support teens to generate questions about their own spirituality, identify their own interests, and connect with others. Evangelical churches in the modern era are no exception: while we often have solid processes for growing in our knowledge of scripture or for fellowship with fellow believers, rarely do we focus on growth in prayer. On the rare times when we do, such growth is often individual in nature rather than congregational. This imbalance is highlighted all the more when we consider that many of the existing works and programs addressing prayer are often written to address individual–rather than congregational–practices.\r\n\r\nThis project was primarily aimed at impacting the people of First Evangelical Free Church of Sioux City Iowa (Evangelical Free Church of America) in their practice of corporate prayer. This was done through two phases. The first consisted of an eight-week sermon series specifically focusing upon the Lord’s Prayer. The second phase of this intervention involved a nine-week workshop in which participants read and discussed selected prayers of the Bible alongside works from church history regarding prayer. These discussions then led into time spent praying in a group format, varying from 3-5 participants around a table to an entire workshop of 31 participants. Due to a hurricane’s social and psychological impact, many find it difficult to return to normal life. Unfortunately, most priests are unaware of this problem that affects our parishioners. While some may scratch it on the surface, others avoid preaching about trauma because they do not know how to address it in their preaching. I developed and tested a program that could help priests in the Diocese of Fajardo Humacao, Puerto Rico, craft and deliver trauma and hope-informed sermons using the narrative preaching approach. The narrative approach affords preachers a wonderful opportunity to communicate the gospel in exciting, new, and unexpected ways.\r\nChapter 1 outlines the project’s ministerial context, problem, purpose, hypothesis, assumptions, and definition of terms. Chapter 2 explores the project’s interdisciplinary framework. It shows how other fields of knowledge, especially sociology and psychology, collaborate with theology to help hurricane trauma survivors. Chapter 3  presents the thesis project’s biblical and theological foundations. It explores “traumatic suffering” and Christian hope. It anchors on the New Testament perspective, which speaks of suffering redeemed by Christ and invites Christians to come to the life of faith in our suffering. It also explores The Apostolic letter of Pope John Paul II, Salvifici doloris, and the Encyclical letter of Pope Benedict XVI, Spe salvi, which, respectively, provide a lens into the Church’s teaching on suffering and the nature of Christian hope. Chapter 4 presents the project’s homiletic framework. It defines and discusses trauma and hope-informed preaching and highlights why a trauma and hope-informed sermon is essential to helping hurricane trauma survivors on the path to recovery and healing. It also sets the homiletical structure for crafting and delivering trauma and a hope-informed sermon using the narrative approach. \r\nDuring the Winter (16 February to 13 April) of 2024, three preachers—Priests of the Diocese of Fajardo Humacao and seventeen (focus group) members of the La Resurreccion Parish community—participated in a seven-week trauma and hope-informed seminar and sermon series. Hence, Chapter 5 sets out the project intervention events. This is particularly seen amongst those who come to Christ out of a Muslim background. This study began with the desire to increase the effectiveness of discipleship amongst believers from an Iranian Muslim background. It evolved into an exploration of discipleship, its foundations, its meaning, and a pathway that would lead to maturity in Christ. It centered on the question, “How can I help my brother from a Muslim background grow up to maturity in Christ?”\r\nThis question was also affected by concerns about culture. Each culture has its own priorities and concerns, the ways in which people relate, understand each other, and live together. Respecting all people includes understanding their culture. Yet culture is critiqued under the authority of the Word of God. What can be retained, and what needs to be changed, in a culture in which the people are living under the Lordship of Christ? This led to an exploration of the Kingdom of God and His universal directives in discipleship. It includes His unchanging standard of holiness and love. It includes the spiritual battle in which discipleship takes place, in the process of traveling to the Lord’s goal for each disciple, maturity in Christ. It included questions such as, “What is maturity in Christ?” and “How do I arrive at maturity in Christ?” This study proposes to make a start in the discussion of discipleship to maturity in Christ. It presents principles and a pathway towards this goal. Always in view is the application of this process into the lives of dear brothers and sisters who have come to Christ from a Muslim background, of which some examples are included. The researcher sought to address that issue through a process of retrieval for use in his modern-day congregation. Looking for guidance from a significant homiletical figure of the past who married his theology to his practice of preaching, this project distilled the homiletical method of John Calvin into a series of nine Homiletical Principles. These Principles were based on Calvin’s sermons, writings, and on secondary research about Calvin. Those nine Homiletical Principles were then applied in a series of sermons preached to the researcher's congregation, where their impact was subsequently assessed using a basic qualitative research design. The research evaluated the impact of those Principles through a series of surveys, evaluations, and interviews to gauge the experience of participants. Through this analysis, it is hoped that by looking back to the past, practitioners will be emboldened to move forward with more confident expositions of God’s Word. Moral injury is gaining awareness across all branches of the armed forces. However, it is not a new concern; it is as old as humanity itself. Learning how to identify and care for moral injury is a developing process that mental health and clergy professionals are seeking guidance to better address needs. I am a member of the US Navy Chaplain Corps and wanted to know what this community knows about moral injury and what would this group of peers want to learn about providing care to those facing moral injury. After conducting interviews of seven Navy Chaplains, seven themes were found through reflective thematic analysis: (A) US Navy Chaplains are strategically placed and appropriately trained to care for moral injury. (B) Foundation of faith directly impacts ability to cope with moral injury. (C) Spiritual and emotional pain is common among those suffering from moral injury. (D) Peer support and trusted sharing are an important part of moral injury healing. (E) Pastoral counseling and listening are vital to moral injury support. (F) Confession is a helpful part of moral injury healing. (G) Finally, strengthening spirituality protects against potential morally injurious events. Navy Chaplains are asking for more specialized moral injury training, because they are embedded close to those who are most impacted with morally injurious events.
