Apophatic preaching can subvert idolatrous concepts, which prevent this encounter. I describe apophatic preaching as preaching nothing (content) in nothing (prayer) with nothing (language).\r\n\r\nMy thesis aims to test the effectiveness of apophatic preaching in evoking an experience of the mystery of God by negative language inspired by Christian apophatic mystics. To be more specific, I intend for apophatic preaching to help congregations become self-critical of their understanding of God, appreciate that God transcends reasoning, learn the practice of letting go of habits of selfishness and ways of seeing God, and see prayer in terms of interior silence.\r\n\r\nI tested apophatic preaching with an RCIA group at the Cathedral of St. Matthew the Apostle in Washington, DC. I tested how this group experienced a series of eight sermons in March and April of 2022. I tested how the group experienced apophatic preaching with a survey the group answered after every sermon. The survey had both “yes or no” and open-ended questions. I then administered a three-question survey to a subset of the RCIA group after the initial preaching series concluded. Finally, I invited an observer to all the sermons and asked for this person’s observations in an informal interview and over email. \r\n\r\nThis thesis contributes to the field of homiletics by describing apophatic preaching, employing it in preaching, and testing its effectiveness. As a result of this process, I discovered that apophatic preaching could make a congregation pay attention and engage with a message as it both subverts fossilized images of God and evokes the divine mystery present with the congregation."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/mark/1.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/NoC-US/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/a5bf2d89-2326-4c62-b6ce-f2b026ae204f?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["a5bf2d89-2326-4c62-b6ce-f2b026ae204f"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["a5bf2d89-2326-4c62-b6ce-f2b026ae204f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["nihtgottes000@yahoo.com"],"_version_":1797976503338663936,"timestamp":"2024-05-02T21:06:52.736Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-01T20:50:25Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-26T14:27:50Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1097ac42-f98b-4db5-92aa-65d40b159495","accessControl_ssim":["978a2944-a7e1-4c26-b1c8-e69e48b25cb0"],"depositor_ssim":["jonfuller10@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["jonfuller10@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Leadership and the Incarnation: Reflections on Cross-Cultural Marketplace Mission and the Role of the Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-01T20:50:24Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-26T14:27:50Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e231e615-1d21-4491-b369-87ff409aa4bb"],"hasLease_ssim":["14679a67-e4c6-4c48-81e4-6c3322b079a7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author explored leadership through the lens of Christ’s roles as prophet, priest and ruler, applying this model to his own leadership journey and to the context of cross-cultural marketplace ministry. \r\nThe research project incorporated the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada (EFC) 2016 Canadian Evangelical Mission Engagement Study (CEMES) survey, which viewed the idea of professionals and business owners working cross-culturally as missionaries positively. Pastors were asked for more information about their church’s engagement with professionals and business owners interested in cross-cultural mission work. The responses to the survey suggested that pastors viewed this approach positively but not many of their churches had made use of the model. Promoting the model to increase familiarity in the church, ensuring Biblical teaching on a theology of work and vocation, and addressing pastoral concerns about cross-cultural and theological training for cross-cultural marketplace mission were all suggested by the research as possible ways to strengthen churches’ engagement with this approach. \r\n"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["jonfuller10@gmail.com"],"_version_":1797407817461661696,"timestamp":"2024-04-26T14:27:51.621Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-03-25T21:09:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-02T15:27:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"9be52089-434b-47b9-83f2-7d490d50072b","accessControl_ssim":["1267899d-3e15-478d-a26d-96e3c3b033ea"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["de5fb0ac-d15c-43b8-b215-2c81aa782d80"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["de5fb0ac-d15c-43b8-b215-2c81aa782d80"],"depositor_ssim":["jlbasebang@yahoo.com"],"depositor_tesim":["jlbasebang@yahoo.com"],"title_tesim":[" Preaching Peace in a Culturally and Politically Divided Context: Church Mediating Peace in Cameroon"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-03-25T21:09:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-02T15:27:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["47537b19-8184-4b23-a624-7cb6ef6ddcdf"],"hasLease_ssim":["4d780185-3422-47a5-980a-dd485cca99cb"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":[" Doctor of Ministry in Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"location_tesim":["Cameroon"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Even though our faith summons us to Christian unity, our churches remain tragically divided along ethnic, tribal, religious, and political lines. This thesis project developed and tested the Sermon-Dialogue-Sermon preaching methodology to help equip the preachers in Cameroon to mediate peace. \r\n\r\nChapter 1 presents the project’s genesis, ministerial context, and the scope of the problem it seeks to address. Delving into the theology of reconciliation, chapter 2, which is the project’s theological framework, lays the groundwork for a biblical and theological understanding of the nonviolent preaching that emerges in the project's interdisciplinary framework in chapter 3. The project’s homiletic foundations presented in Chapter 4 discuss the sermon-dialogue-sermon method to empower preachers to preach well in a divided zone.\r\n\r\nThe training of two priests and a lay person who, in turn, conducted the sermon-dialogue-sermon method in their different contexts tested its hypothesis before twenty men and nineteen women who had deliberative dialogue with them. Chapter 5 discusses the training and the sermon-dialogue-sermon method in detail and the qualitative and quantitative data obtained through the insider, outsider, and researcher used in the intervention. Chapter 6 describes the thesis project’s identifiable findings through narrative and data analysis, concluding that the Sermon-Dialogue-Sermon Method is proper for the Church to mediate peace in Cameroon. This chapter also discusses the recommendations, lessons learned, and areas for further study. It delves into the research’s possible future use and development, including the publication and expansion of the Sermon-Dialogue-Sermon method. \r\n"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/de5fb0ac-d15c-43b8-b215-2c81aa782d80?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["de5fb0ac-d15c-43b8-b215-2c81aa782d80"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["de5fb0ac-d15c-43b8-b215-2c81aa782d80"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["jlbasebang@yahoo.com"],"_version_":1795237245988372480,"timestamp":"2024-04-02T15:27:33.355Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-03-20T16:15:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-02T15:29:38Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"89ed0b83-89f8-4b55-9d5f-13c6116f86c0","accessControl_ssim":["e58a4537-3da0-435d-9dcf-cb78cebeb7f3"],"depositor_ssim":["sallybruce1000@gmail.com"],"depositor_tesim":["sallybruce1000@gmail.com"],"title_tesim":["Developing One’s Personal Prayer Life: An Essential Element for Spiritual Formation in the Fundamental Evangelical Community"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-03-20T16:15:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-02T15:29:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5175effd-5e56-4c52-bd25-9155e7a39c29"],"hasLease_ssim":["8d74d8d0-389d-4f4a-aef5-89cdcf1ae229"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"year_tesim":["2022"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. One of the major themes that surfaced in the author’s spiritual autobiography (Chapter II: Getting to Know God—A Lifelong Process) was how God used various aspects of instruction to lead her to a saving faith in the Lord as well as to aid in forming her spiritually. Drawing from this, she developed her model of spiritual formation as an instructional one. Based on the ongoing work of God and the directive of the Great Commission to make and teach disciples, this model (Chapter III: Making Disciples—An Instructional Model of Spiritual Formation) examined instructional considerations and included applications for formal worship and personal and public practices. The third perspective of spiritual formation in this portfolio involved an action research project that used the author’s instructional model and another theme that emanated from her spiritual biography, prayer. This action research project took the form of an online prayer workshop (Chapter IV: An Online Personal Prayer Workshop Designed for Vulnerable Evangelicals) and was designed to explore various aspects of prayer, while also considering the impact of one’s personality type and spiritual temperaments. While participants reported an enhanced prayer life and a deeper relationship with God, recommended modifications to the model are noted in Chapter V. Overall, this workshop and portfolio both demonstrate that instruction can be an effective means to foster spiritual formation."],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["sallybruce1000@gmail.com"],"_version_":1795237377967390720,"timestamp":"2024-04-02T15:29:39.220Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-03-10T13:35:16Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-03-20T14:27:59Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"efa2f1f8-6ed3-49be-a612-b40181f71eeb","accessControl_ssim":["8c869a17-0d49-461e-80e9-d12fad62df3a"],"depositor_ssim":["pastor.sharon@nbmto.org"],"depositor_tesim":["pastor.sharon@nbmto.org"],"title_tesim":["The Lighthouse Foundation: Discovering the Underlying Reasons that Prevented its Launch, While Understanding Leadership When Faced With Failure"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-03-10T13:35:15Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-03-20T14:27:58Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e686147c-0421-4949-8c00-d24dc1dcffca"],"hasLease_ssim":["69cae424-9190-449b-99d7-7d58fffecbf0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"year_tesim":["2023"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. It includes my Leadership Narrative, Philosophy of\r\nLeadership, Ministry Context Analysis and Project Report. As a therapist, I have\r\nnoticed that an individual’s communication style tremendously\r\nimpacts—positively or negatively—their relationships. During the program and\r\nprocess of writing this Portfolio, I again witnessed the pivotal role that self-\r\nawareness about one’s communication style can play in improving one’s\r\nrelationships with others and strengthening teamwork. My research project\r\nfocused on the communication styles of Joy Church's (JC) key leaders and\r\nexplored how their communication impacted their team building. The\r\nmethodologies I drew on for this project were Participatory Action Research\r\n(PAR) and Ethnographic Research (ER). While the project was neither a PAR\r\nproject nor an Ethnography, both methodologies inspired me and provided\r\nmethods that I used. PAR methods helped me and the project participants to stay actively involved from the start to the end of the project. ER methods allowed me to deeply understand the group’s shared culture and behaviours. I applied the insights I gained and helped the leadership team acknowledge and discern the potential drawbacks and benefits of different communication styles. I also discovered that their communication styles were related to cultural factors such as organizational hierarchy and respect for elders. Understanding JC’s ministry culture and discovering its leaders’ values and communication skills improved the leadership team’s communication."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["kona2015victoria@gmail.com"],"_version_":1795984402375770112,"timestamp":"2024-04-10T21:23:17.211Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-02-05T16:23:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:24:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"28f203e8-ed97-4596-8209-5647d36c13ca","accessControl_ssim":["6e35c597-6b80-44e8-851c-1276c7a25851"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a"],"depositor_ssim":["dntoole@diobpt.org"],"depositor_tesim":["dntoole@diobpt.org"],"title_tesim":["Trauma-Informed Preaching and Racial Justice"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-02-05T16:23:44Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:19:46Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["2cbbaff2-1d02-447f-a3e1-957ce18093f1"],"hasLease_ssim":["d8063e5e-2335-4032-bc88-60c77e7d5108"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry in Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Toole, Patrick"],"keyword_tesim":["Trauma","Racial Justice","Preaching"],"publisher_tesim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"subject_tesim":["Preaching"],"abstract_tesim":["In the aftermath of the tragic killing of George Floyd and subsequent racial unrest that divided the nation, Catholic preachers have largely remained silent. The preachers in my diocese have also been reluctant to speak out. I developed and tested a training program to prepare and motivate priests and deacons within the Diocese of Bridgeport, Connecticut, to preach on racial justice through trauma-informed instruction. Trauma-informed instruction includes the science of trauma and its effects on the body, along with a theological perspective and preaching structures based on these insights.\r\n\r\nThe first chapter outlines the thesis project’s genesis, ministerial context, problem, purpose, hypothesis, assumptions, and limitations. Chapter 2 investigates the thesis project’s interdisciplinary framework. This chapter examines the relationship between fear and racism, the relevance of the trauma recovery process to racial justice preaching, and advice for preachers based on insights from trauma-informed psychology. Chapter 3 explores my theological framework. This chapter uses Hans Urs von Balthasar’s Holy Saturday theology as a metaphor for racial trauma survivors. The chapter also applies trauma-informed theology to racial justice preaching. Chapter 4 articulates the thesis’ homiletic foundation. This chapter discusses trauma-informed preaching and racial trauma, analyzes preaching on racial justice, and presents preaching structures and methods for challenging topics, such as racism. \r\n\r\nFive priests and five deacons attended my racial justice training program in Bridgeport, Connecticut, from October 5, 2023, through December 15, 2023. Chapter 5 presents this ministerial intervention in detail. Chapter 6 presents the thesis study’s results, including quantitative and qualitative data triangulated from multiple sources that support the hypothesis that trauma-informed instruction prepares and motivates preachers to speak on racial justice. The chapter also examines lessons learned and suggests areas of improvement for future training programs. It concludes with a discussion of future opportunities. \r\n"],"license_tesim":["https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["b6edc6ac-cc4e-439e-b14c-d4d64316ea07","c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["b6edc6ac-cc4e-439e-b14c-d4d64316ea07","c4296561-1159-4fb6-a3bf-ee46dc221f3a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["dntoole@diobpt.org"],"_version_":1791129999537864704,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:24:37.904Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-01-30T21:09:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:09:56Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ba062e2a-2131-4413-b2f9-ee36e4269834","accessControl_ssim":["982577a8-2848-435c-a254-a3099026d2cf"],"depositor_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Developing a Family Ministry Strategy for Stone Ridge Baptist Church, Alexander City, Alabama"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-01-30T21:09:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:29:22Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bef9a83b-5e5b-469d-9a60-9abfad90dcc9"],"hasLease_ssim":["fa1a345e-233d-4021-bf4a-d2f9cf856862"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2023"],"location_tesim":["Alabama"],"resource_type_tesim":["Abstract"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Young, Amy Lauren"],"subject_tesim":["Church work with families","Baptist Church"],"abstract_tesim":["This project aimed to develop a ministry strategy for the family ministry of Stone Ridge Baptist Church, Alexander City, Alabama. First, I examined the attendance records of Stone Ridge to identify family units and developed and distributed a survey to parents to discover the spiritual needs of families. Second, I explored existing family ministry literature, interviewed two pastors, and determined the best practices of existing family ministry strategies. Third, I recruited and trained a strategy planning team of five church members who assisted me in developing a family ministry strategy for Stone Ridge using the internal audit of attendance records, survey results, and a list of best practices in family ministry. Fourth, I presented the family ministry strategy to the senior pastor and a group of selected parents for consideration.
