The project director researched the simple church process and the skills needed to implement and participate in the process. He developed and led an equipping workshop to train selected deacons in these simple church process skills. In this project report, the project director has provided information on the process and results of research. The congregation was surveyed using the REVEAL Spiritual Life Survey. The researcher then led a strategic planning process to clarify the purpose, vision, values, and direction of the church. Changes were implemented based on survey data and group input before the same survey was administered again. Christian spiritual formation is the process whereby Christians are conformed to the image of Christ. Extroverted Christian women (tested using Myers Briggs Type Indicator) participated in group practice of spiritual disciplines over a four month period. Quantitative analysis included a behavioral questionnaire and the Spiritual Assessment Inventory. Qualitative analysis was based on individual interviews. Four small groups produced a custom-made lectionary, collected related reference materials, and provided the pastor with weekly exegetical and presentation ideas, supporting materials, and feedback on proposed sermons. The pastor's increase in satisfaction and reduction in frustration with the overall sermon preparation process indicated positive change. It begins with a description of an emerging American Buddhism that is the basis for this proposed homiletic and a brief explanation of some foundational concepts of Buddhism. It then explores what Buddhist scripture and tradition contribute to three aspects of homiletics: purposes of preaching, hermeneutics, and crafting the sermon. Part of the examination deals with how biblical teaching interacts with economic theory. The biblical themes of creation, the covenants, and the community of God are analyzed with respect to biblical principles. Because of their fears and differences they have only engaged the community of Benton Harbor, Michigan in nominal ways. The thesis focuses on interviews conducted, using the research method of Narrative Inquiry, with people from Union Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church and Zion Evangelical United Church of Christ. I interviewed a cross-section of both churches using Narrative Inquiry as an approach to identify similarities. My final chapter shares the story of the tensions between the two cities.
