Unfortunately, very little has been done to develop discipleship materials uniquely for Native people. This project presents a new spiritual formation process designed specifically for the students at the Indian Bible College in Flagstaff, Arizona. The author researched spiritual formation theory and Native American culture and Christianity. Huntingdon College students served as interns at First United Methodist Church, Montgomery, AL. Interns, program staff, potential employing clergy, and Huntingdon College religion faculty interviews described the characteristics and capacities of effective local church program staff and how college and congregation might work together to prepare such impact of Hurricane Ivan on the Westport community in Jamaica, the suffering that followed, and the residents' fear that God had abandoned them. The project, carried out with ten residents of the Westport community, explores the relationship of God to suffering. Qualitative research methods help to understand the religious beliefs of respondents, disaster preparedness, and the effect the hurricane had on residents. What makes this retreat and The Sourcebook unique is that it integrates the Hindu chakra system and world spiritual traditions. The chakra system is an ancient belief that there are energy centers in the body that govern daily activity. The author used a qualitative research method for gathering data. Personal interviews from pastors faced with this dilemma, plus questionnaires and interviews from his family, churches and communities, where he pastored with his disabled wife, played a significant role in his research. As well, an archival research into the effects and challenges facing caregivers and their families added to his insights. This project focuses on families in a particular congregation, and upon the noticeable impact of intentional Sabbath practices within their homes. The Participatory Action Research model of qualitative research is utilized in the development of this project. After surveying his context, the author facilitated a series of presentations on Sabbath. Following an extended period of time for participants to engage Sabbath practices, further data is collected. The before and after data are contrasted. A set of guiding questions was designed to lead teachers to plan class experiences. The guiding questions were pre-tested, interviews were conducted, and the guiding questions were refined. A teacher used the guiding questions to create and lead an adult class. The resulting class was observed and evaluated. Follow-up interviews evaluated the guiding questions in diverse settings. Soldiers were administered a pre-test/posttest quantitative design to measure the differences that came from participating in the four-week prayer project aimed at premeditating combat experiences. The project discovered improvements in spiritual and relational well-being based on the participant's responses, including greater knowledge of the biblical laments, increased positive relationship with oneself, God and others.
