The author chose the season of Lent to preach a series of sermons in his congregation on the subject of fasting. AI is a process that can lead to vision discernment by building on past successes and creating a sense of missional alignment. AI is based on organizational and social theory that, when combined with theological understandings, provide the church and leadership with a methodology for discernment that will engage a large portion of a congregation. This is a grounded study that engaged a 1200+ membership church in a large AI. African Americans are losing their heirs' property on John's Island at an alarming rate. The story of Naboth's vinyard (I Kings 21) serves as a model to discuss the effects that wealth and those with social power have on this land loss. The answer a Christian gives to the problem of a loving God co-existing with the world's ills will necessarily affect his or her relationship with God. The research took place within five discussion groups; the researcher designed each session to cover one particular aspect of theodicy. Participants filled out questionnaires before and after each class. The researcher analyzed the differences between the pre- and post-class surveys. Drawing upon ritual theory and the work of Augusto Boal and his Theatre of the Oppressed, the author has presented sermons incorporating embedded ritualization inviting people to a transformative experience of God. Feedback to these sermons was solicited in order to measure the effectiveness of the embedded ritualization in opening the listeners to an experience of God. He asserts that new pastors are not supported in their first calls. He gathers information from a sample group of new pastors and identifies several key areas in which pastors feel underprepared or have anxiety as they begin their first calls. Using a qualitative research method the author spent time with over 25 pastors discovering their fears and where they find their support in ministry.
