As the pastor of the historic Tabernacle Baptist Church in Augusta, GA, the author was able to ask the question: can biblical expositional preaching help a multigenerational church steeped in therapeutic culture deal with contemporary issues? A case study was produced where first the author developed a focus group to develop the contemporary issues that were important to the congregation as well as a survey to identify the top contemporary issues to be highlighted in a sermon series preached at Tabernacle Baptist Church. After the sermon series, those who participated in the initial survey were asked to participate in a follow-up survey to see if the preaching was helpful in dealing with contemporary issues. The author reports the results of the case study and makes some reflections about the strengths and limitations of the project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714847550603264,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:06.964Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:00:18Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:48:31Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e412fc3e-415e-45c2-bb13-d90be166a9fc","accessControl_ssim":["7e699973-2e60-468b-8e01-0eaf2bcde149"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A different animal: discovering a paradigm for pastoral ministry among Friends"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T13:00:14Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:39:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["07c20b61-14ba-494b-9042-73b62df2cc01"],"hasLease_ssim":["f7de7abf-fb6b-4aa3-87a8-d03084606cd8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Matthew H Bevere"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Philip C Baisley"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Ashland Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Society of Friends","Pastoral theology--Society of Friends"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project focused on discovering the degree to which Friends superintendents, educators, and pastors believe in the existence of a uniquely Quaker paradigm of pastoral ministry and which traditional activities of the pastor are performed in a uniquely Quaker manner by pastors within the Society of Friends. Fewer givers gave more: annual per capita giving increased 25%. Responses to 3,034 congregational surveys indicated positive correlation between increased generosity and stewardship leadership, spiritual nurture, social justice involvement, and stewardship best practices. Congregations where givers and revenue increased, with individual annual giving over {dollar}1,000, more often engaged all of these strategies. Congregations with decreasing revenue were least likely to use any of them.
