The project asks whether the method of shared leadership in which the senior pastor, Dr. Mark Lacey, and the author are currently engaged in is theologically sound. Central to this examination is the notion of 'prevenient trust.' Prevenient trust, like prevenient grace, is that which is offered before any effort is made to merit it, specifically in regard to leadership. Just as God has shown such trust to human leaders throughout scripture, so might those charged with the responsibility of leading Christ's church today extend a similar trust to those associates who work alongside them."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799718000098541568,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T02:27:13.468Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:07:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8ec7c02f-46a1-4dd6-ab67-262ec6b38163","accessControl_ssim":["fe549247-d66e-495a-8ba3-adff1e57af01"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching and the pastoral persona"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:18:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["66e6b173-396c-4831-be6d-90003f637971"],"hasLease_ssim":["cf6ae1bc-3816-40f6-ae58-e58e8440de81"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lucy Lind Hogan"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The author deals with the following issues: (1) The legitimacy of such dialog in the context of urban ministry, (2) the theological conception underlying such dialog (Paul Tillich's 'method of correlation,' and Douglas John Hall's conception of a contextualized theology), and (3) examples of such dialog that begins with novels of Philip Roth, Paul Auster, and John Updike. The author describes the reactions of a study group to whom he presented his ideas and whose participants consisted of active church members and church leaders (The Montreat study group). He also describes and analyzes the responses of ten secular persons--Germans and Americans--whom he asked to fill out a questionnaire (The Questionnaire). The writer decided to conduct a study that would center on the sharing of testimonies or spiritual journeys by a select sample of prisoners. For twelve weeks, 20 African-American men--10 Christians and 10 Muslims--poured their hearts out and shared their experiences of spiritual transformation, not only as individuals but also as persons of faith. The African American experience revealed that Islam has better served incarcerated persons than the Black church. The reasons are: 1. Islam has been more visibly available both inside and outside the prison. 2. Islam provides protection and community life. 3. Islam serves a a counter culture to the regimentation of institutionalization and provides a survival mode for the incarcerated not readily recognized within the Christianity of the Black church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Hartford Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8e52e4c8-38b6-4846-872d-a744b4f5725d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799721830487949312,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:28:06.412Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:29:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"e7c25f79-ac30-4f47-9b94-909a61717c87","accessControl_ssim":["e858f21a-b31c-4858-a64a-18d153df6caf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A whole church approach to spiritual growth through covenant and commitment at the Congregational Church of New Fairfield"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:56:06Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:45:37Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0df1fefe-3fe9-498c-97ff-743739558995"],"hasLease_ssim":["b2b7ae83-09a3-4bd7-bfc9-e8802843813d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Cynthia A Woolever"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Patricia A Nicholas"],"keyword_tesim":["Religious surveys"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregational churches--United States","Spiritual formation"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project sought to promote spiritual growth within the entire congregation by offering a wide variety of spiritual practices, activities, and events. The congregation explored methods of reframing their story through historical reflection of past narrative events, faith visioning for the future and community building through creativity and play. The implication of this project are that a rural small membership church with God's help, faithful utilization of their spiritual resources, and diligence, can recover their community and purpose of mission."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799720680473755648,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T03:09:49.673Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:55:37Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:12:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"049020d5-ed25-4b77-9ca8-4fc0e489fe2a","accessControl_ssim":["9ad3ecce-85b8-4ac0-8230-812b459e256c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A sense of community within a congregational setting"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:55:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:14:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["721457cf-0abf-471a-8566-c1282ad78b77"],"hasLease_ssim":["16d24da8-e10b-492e-804c-773b641121ab"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Heidi Hadsell"],"year_tesim":["2007"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thomas V Calderone"],"publisher_tesim":["Hartford Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Malpractice","Theology","Church dedication","Liturgics"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to reestablish a sense of community within a congregation that had become fractionalized due to pastoral abuse.
