Chapter one explores the character and fate of small membership churches in the twenty-first century. Chapter two reviews the history of small membership United Methodist churches in Maine. Chapter three introduces the district conference project, defines holy conferencing, and details the three events in the Mid-Maine District where transformation tools were taught to small membership churches. It is composed of introducing the concept of the shadow in analytical psychology, through Korean tales, dreams and the stories of the Bible which dealt with the task of mid-life and the shadow, explaining the theories of some theologians who have studied the shadow in-depth and introducing the case of operating the shadow workshop and analyzing it. Yet because transmission of HIV/AIDS often involves forms of sexual contact and/or substance use which are condemned in most Christian communities, and because many persons living with HIV/AIDS have had deeply painful experiences with Christians, prejudice, fear, and pain create a gap between Christians and persons living with HIV/AIDS.  AIDS education within church communities needs to bridge this gap.  This project is a ministry tool in which Christian communities interact with a body of artistic work in order to shift misunderstanding, prejudice, and fear concerning persons living with HIV/AIDS.  The project shows that art can be used to bring about understanding, transformation, and dialogue. Participants completed a full one-day retreat which included lectures, participative exercises, spiritual disciplines such as formational prayer, and Lectio Divina. Pre and post tests were given to measure the results. The results of the data revealed increased movement in the participants' self-esteem. Further positive measurement evidenced a desire for Christian fellowship and a deeper relationship with God. He examined biblical texts and early church writings to illustrate hospitality as an experience of grace. The author then raised questions regarding the appropriate personal and social responses to that grace. Because of his Katrina experience, both people and pastor re-learned that hospitality was a necessary practice in the faith community. Through direct observation, worship evaluations and candid interviews, the writer has discovered the benefits of this model as a pathway to revival. To validate this theory, the author proposed to introduce into the St. John Baptist youth mentoring program a component of remembering, reclaiming, and sharing stories in the African American tradition, to encourage faith and promote academic performance.  The author researched literature to substantiate the significance of storytelling as a transforming experience.  Research included stories of ancestors, the Black church tradition and personal life stories. How would the physical move of the church change the congregation's character? Could the church re-brand its identity to reach the new community based on their expressed needs? Using the Wesleyan quadrilateral to structure a theological foundation, the author argued that engagement in such concerns is essential to both. The author presented a project that provides one way to link the works of mercy to a congregation's understanding of its Christian identity and practice. The author completed the project by interviewing congregants who were engaged in the project.
