Hip hop is more than rap songs and music. It is a culture all its own. The author's thesis addresses preaching as a tool to invite a small congregation east of Atlanta to accept and welcome the hip hop culture into the church. The author's thesis is that when a congregation becomes knowledgeable about hip hop, it is more accepting and more open to welcoming young people that embrace hip hop. The author's method was to introduce hip hop to the congregation by hosting a hip hop concert. The author also asked the congregation to complete a questionnaire about their views on hip hop culture. The author educated the congregation by preaching a series of sermons about hip hop and its history. At the worship services during the sermons, recording artists sang hip hop songs, hip hop prayers were offered, and youth were actively involved in the worship services. The author discovered at the conclusion of her research that because the congregation was educated about hip hop culture, the members were willing to accept hip hop into Livingston Chapel CME Church. Additionally, the congregation was also more welcoming to having young people in the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128631280402432,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:02:53.032Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:41:42Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:39:23Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7e1ef476-0fe6-47ee-a79f-8b6e557e76ff","accessControl_ssim":["71446f77-c2cb-4bf9-8ddc-1b95d76240be"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Let your priests be clothed with righteousness: a pre-seminary spiritual formation program"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:41:41Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:51:08Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8e342984-6785-4704-8ddf-af3947505a51"],"hasLease_ssim":["5f31bbc9-4b8c-4405-a319-c7fb48ad9e84"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry (Ambridge, PA)"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip E Harrold"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Gilbert T Crosby"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Episcopal School for Ministry"],"subject_tesim":["Spiritual formation","Clergy--Biblical teaching","Clergy--Training of"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The presupposition for the project described in this thesis is that God's holy people require holy leaders, leaders who have been formed not only academically, but spiritually. My intention in this thesis is to combine expressionistic imagery with African American celebrative preaching. Most Swedish sermons are cognitive and didactic and without celebration. Preachers tend to concentrate more on law than gospel. After such a sermon there might be some quiet time for reflection. Through imaginative expressionistic celebrative preaching I will bring to Swedish preaching color and joy, which will help the listener experience the assurance of grace. In this thesis I have defined expressionistic preaching and described the African American celebrative sermon and its theology. I have also presented imaginative homiletics and its theology and presented a psychological model of interpretation of the imaginary and the mystic experience. In my thesis I have made a descriptive study of the effects in the listeners after an expressionistic celebrative sermon and described the problems with celebration in a Swedish context and given a psychological explanation for the absence of instantaneous celebration. My conclusions are: The expressionistic celebrative sermon is a colorful and positive experience. Swedish listeners experience the assurance of grace, but they don't celebrate as a group. Celebration is expressed differently in the African American context."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["d722638c-a7e2-43f3-93ff-4762bde0dde7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133300496007168,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:17:05.942Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:41:12Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:26:05Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"c5a1f11e-8ccc-488c-bfd1-0a5c3ee42c88","accessControl_ssim":["49f84408-52eb-40f0-b363-5d1437fa621c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["What do body mind and spirit in community have to do with preaching?"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T12:41:11Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:48:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["48e4eb7c-3f1d-4f9a-98f3-48c5aab92473"],"hasLease_ssim":["23f84fc3-ff08-41b8-9425-374fe552b0c8"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"advisor_tesim":["Timothy V Olson"],"year_tesim":["2009"],"resource_type_tesim":["Dissertation"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Pamela Challis"],"publisher_tesim":["Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago"],"subject_tesim":["Clergy--Health and hygiene","Mind and body","Holistic medicine"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis proposes a direct correlation between the preacher's health in body, mind, and spirit and the effectiveness of preaching.
