Can the addition of professional staff bring this about? This thesis is a review of seven churches that have multi-staff ministry settings. Five of the churches used to be solo-pastorates in their recent past. The impact of the addition of staff members to these churches is evaluated. The research discovered adding staff does impact the numerical and spiritual growth of congregations. This thesis will illustrate the process First Presbyterian Church of Burlington went through in order to shift the deacons' role from one of historical stewardship/maintenance leadership to one of pastoral care. Members of the church were led through a discernment process in order to identify and utilize these spiritual gifts. Prayer and preaching were the foundation for both the preacher and the laity throughout the change process. This thesis explores sociological, historical and theological-interpretive factors that have created this situation. Data show that most ministry to women is social, child-care or service oriented, yet many women desire excellent teaching, experiences in spiritual formation and development of their gifts. How healthy is a partnership model? What exaclty is a partnership model? Which scriptures address a partnership model? Why will older mission strategies of the past not work in the Balkans? Are these partnerships helpful or hurtful? What is most needed to progress? These are questions addressed in this thesis. Drawing from Augustine, from church planters in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), and from my own experience, I propose that the three central themes of mainline new church preaching are: hospitality, teaching, and prophetic proclamation. This thesis also breaks new ground by incorporating newcomers/seekers into the sermon formation process. Consumerism is analyzed through its history and through its present key features, including the loss of certainty, individualism, choice, consumption, and commodification. By looking at individualism, branding and shopping, identity in a consumeristic world is examined. The answer lies in the adoption of practices, as defined by Alistair McIntyre. Hospitality, which is given as a model of practice, is examined starting from its biblical roots up to current proposals. Research has also looked at both the cultural background of the audience as well as central religious beliefs which exist in Honduras. To answer the question, How can expatriate missionaries enhance the pastoral ministries of evangelical church leaders in Honduras? The training used an action and reflection model. The chaplains actively engaged in ministry while reflecting upon the theological basis for that ministry. The Confessions of Saint Augustine of Hippo was the primary resource for spiritual self-examination. Chaplains need to be spiritually ready for ministry in war. This training occurred during 2003-2004 at Chapel Five, Fort Dix, New Jersey.
