What pastors and other church leaders now require are theo-poetic forums, in which we might explore the words, images and metaphors that influence the way we do ministry in the postmodern world. The biblical text itself yields an abundance of possible literary and mythic associations -- many of which have compelling resonance with those who feel estranged and alienated from the institutional church community. This project offers analysis of truly 'raw data,' which does not include numerical gauges and statistical percentages. The most insightful data in the case of the Crossroads Presbyterian Church of Limerick, Pennsylvania, arises from the primordial creative capacity of those who respond to passages like Matthew 13:52 and testify, in word and in deed, to the Truth of the ever-elusive and unfolding Gospel Story. In this regard, pastors are encouraged to submit themselves to the scribal training of Jesus of Nazareth and to embrace an identity as struggling poet."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127948125798400,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:52:01.525Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:47:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:02:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"757798f0-cd21-4e62-abe6-33887da79292","accessControl_ssim":["0f335812-50da-404f-a980-5e57bb7db006"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Gen X goes to church: patterns of affiliation in Saint Paul"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T11:47:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:34:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["1f0abfa4-322b-4ef1-975f-1671d0447f40"],"hasLease_ssim":["73c32e03-cee9-4931-a895-92d11c1b3f32"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Rodger Nishioka"],"year_tesim":["2008"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["David D Colby"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Commitment to the church","Central Presbyterian Church (Saint Paul, Minn)","Generation X","Church membership","Identification (Religion)"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project applies the generational theory of Strauss and Howe to the paradox of rising spiritual interest and declining mainline church membership. The goal was to address the theme of biblical leadership using a retreat setting and opportunities for group dialogue and reflection in order to help the leaders in the church to better understand and practice more effective and faithful leadership. The project addresses the theoretical assumptions that underlie the project, including biblical and theological assumptions as well as assumptions about the church as an organism, leadership, and the culture of the church. Participatory Action Research method: The research process involved in this study led to important findings. Participants acknowledge that the culture of the merged congregation has a significant impact on the strength and effectiveness of the congregation's leadership. Results from this study also suggest that the process of engaging in the Participatory Action Research together resulted in a process of the leaders beginning to construct a new culture for the congregation. By engaging in the process, the leaders helped to both re-envision and reenact their relationship as a more collaborative and less conflictual and to begin to see the congregation as a single unified church. Secondly, the leaders began to see the church more as an organism rather than an organization. As they began to glimpse themselves as an organism, they see not only the differences among members, but also their relatedness. They understand themselves as different parts of the Body of Christ with different roles. They also see the role of Jesus as the head. In an organism, control is not distributed but retained by the head.
